Volleyball Battles Boston College in Five-Set Heartbreaker

LOCATION: Connell Recreation Center – Chestnut Hill, Mass.

SCORE: Boston College 3, UAlbany 2 (17-25, 25-23, 25-18, 19-25, 16-14)

SHORT STORY: UAlbany pushed undefeated Boston College to the brink before falling in a five-set thriller at the Boston College Invitational. 

COACH JOSH PICKARD: "Great battle today. Our offense was clicking and we were able to push them in the areas that we hoped to. A couple of bounces here and there and we get out of here with a win against an ACC opponent. Very proud of our effort today."

KEY STATS

  • Graduate outside hitter Shynelle Woroniuk posted a season-high 28 kills on .286 hitting with 8 digs.

  • Graduate opposite Kendall Harris added 10 kills on .318 hitting with 2 blocks.

  • Redshirt-junior middle blocker Gabriella Karman hit .294 with 7 kills, 3 blocks, and 1 ace.

  • Senior middle blocker Tori Wilson tallied 7 kills and 5 blocks.

  • Sophomore setter Maria Olga Siapani dished out 49 assists, adding 4 digs, 4 blocks, and 2 aces.

  • Redshirt-junior libero Brooke Malek anchored the defense with 20 digs.

  • Sophomore defensive specialist Kasia Barletta chipped in 20 digs and 4 service aces.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • UAlbany came out firing in the opening set, hitting .520 as a team. 

  • Shynelle Woroniuk and Gabriella Karman powered the attack while Kasia Barletta added an ace in a 25-17 win.

  • The second set was back-and-forth with 10 ties. 

  • The Great Danes fought off two Boston College runs, but the Eagles closed late to edge it 25-23.

  • Boston College carried momentum into the third, limiting UAlbany to a .032 attack percentage. 

  • Despite kills from Kendall Harris and Tori Wilson, the Eagles took the set 25-18.

  • UAlbany answered in the fourth, jumping out early behind a pair of Barletta aces and strong blocking from Wilson and Karman. 

  • Woroniuk closed the frame with back-to-back kills for a 25-19 victory.

  • The deciding fifth set saw both teams trade points to a 14-14 tie. 

  • Boston College converted the final two rallies to escape with a 16-14 win.

NEXT: UAlbany heads to the Red Raider Classic in Lubbock, Texas, on Friday, September 19, facing Texas Tech at 1:00 PM ET and Incarnate Word at 5:30 PM ET, followed by Ole Miss on Saturday, September 20, at 3:30 PM ET.
