ALBANY, N.Y. – The University at Albany men's soccer program enters the 2025 season with a roster that combines experienced returners and a large incoming class.
Head coach
Trevor Gorman and the Great Danes look to climb the America East standings after a year of development in 2024. Gorman enters his 15th season leading the Great Danes, having guided the program to two America East Championships (2016, 2017) and a pair of NCAA Tournament appearances.
Gorman on the 2025 Season: "Our goal is to work hard and improve every day. We want to compete and enjoy the moment each opportunity we get. Every match on our schedule will bring a different challenge. With a group like ours, we know we're far from the finished article and that's one of the most exciting reasons to come in each day."
Goalkeepers
The goalkeeper spot remains unannounced heading into the season. Senior
Kodai Tsuzuki saw action in four games last fall, earning two wins. Tsuzuki is joined by junior
Andrej Krivokapic, along with freshmen
Alexander Genz and
Kevin Gil, as the Danes build competition in net.
Gorman on the goalkeepers: "We feel we have a strong position group.
Kodai Tsuzuki returns with a year of experience at the Division 1 level under his belt.
Kevin Gil joined us in January and has made great progress, and we're excited about what we've seen from Krivokapic and Genz in their early days with the program."
Defenders
Junior
Ethan Cook returns after starting 17 matches and recording two assists in 2024. Graduate
Lucas Watt is back after redshirting last season, while sophomore
Luca Grilla also saw minutes in the back line. The unit is bolstered by junior
David Medina, sophomore
Rodrigo Hermelo, as well as newcomers
William Bruce,
John Fragakis,
Benedikt Rachor, and
Owen Tuttle.
Gorman on the defenders: "Our defense is a nice mix of experience and youth.
Lucas Watt brings important experience plus leadership. He and Cook have played almost 80 games between them. We've added some older players with a lot of collegiate experience in Bruce, Fragakis, and Medina, as well as having several young players who are pushing hard for places."
Midfielders
Junior
Ivar Gissurarson led the midfield returners last season with two goals and an assist. Sophomore
Brennan McDermott added an assist in 14 appearances, while classmates
Jordan Shullenberger (America East All-Rookie Team),
Caleb Vallance, and
Marcos Villanueva provide experience. Sophomore
Breckin Fett also adds depth after appearing in multiple games. The midfield welcomes
Roko Branko Mrvelj,
Marius Brandmayr,
Alexander Clive,
Omar Galan and
David Barkan to strengthen an already deep group.
Gorman on the midfield: "Midfield is an important area in any team, and it's important to have strength and depth in this area of the pitch. Vallance, Gissurarson, Shullenberger, and McDermott all return with valuable experience. Additionally, new additions like Mrvelj, Brandmayr, and Clive have all had strong preseasons. We know we'll need a large group of players all ready to contribute in these roles."
Forwards
Junior
Zach Lind, who scored his first career goal last season, is returning and is joined by graduate
Isaac Filippo, junior
Andre Navas, sophomore
Shawn Tanaka, and freshman
Tommy McFadden, giving the Danes additional options up front.
Gorman on the forwards: "We're pleased to have several options at the front end of the park.
Zach Lind returns and is healthy heading into his junior season. Filippo and Tanaka bring a lot of experience, and look sharp, plus Navas has adapted well and brings some different qualities that will pair well with the others."
The 2024 Season
UAlbany finished 2024 with a 4-12-2 overall record, including a 1-5-1 mark in America East play. With a strong group of returners and a deep incoming class, the Great Danes will look for more consistency across the pitch this fall.
