Short Story: The fifth-seeded University at Albany baseball team took down the fourth-seeded Maine Black Bears, the hosts, in the first game of the 2025 Northeast Delta Dental America East Baseball Championship on Wednesday afternoon.
Dylan Banner and
Matthew Mariano were lights out on the mound, and late heroics from
Victor Mazzara sent the Black Bears packing and the Great Danes advancing.

How it Happened:
- Dylan Banner started on the mound for the Great Danes, Caleb Leys started for the Black Bears.
- UAlbany struck first in the opening inning. Ryan Ferremi collected the first hit of the Championship before Levi McAllister brought him home with two outs on an RBI double to make it 1-0.
- Maine got on the board in the fourth inning on a two-run blast by Myles Sargent to make it 2-1.
- The score moved to 3-1 in favor of Maine in the fifth on an RBI double from Brody Rasmussen, scoring Chris Bear.
- The Great Danes used the sixth inning to erase the deficit and shoot out to a 4-3 lead. Luke Myers scored on a passed ball with the bases loaded, Levi McAllister hit a sac fly to right to score Ferremi, and Luke Filippi scored on another passed ball later in the inning.
- The lead didn't remain however, with Maine tying the game in the bottom half of the inning on an RBI double from Damon Gaither.
- Matthew Mariano was handed the ball for the Great Danes to start the seventh.
- Gianni Gambardella replaced Leys on the mound for Maine with a runner on first in the ninth.
- Victor Mazzara played the hero in the ninth for UAlbany, scoring Michael Maggio and Luis Kaleb on a single to right to take a 6-4 lead.
