SHORT STORY: Crafty base-running and well-timed hits led to a doubleheader sweep against Maine, Saturday.
GAME ONE
SCORE: UAlbany 7, Maine 2
KEY STATS
- Senior Caitlyn Frederick led the team with three RBI and two runs off three hits, including her first career home run.
- Sophomore Mary Kate Murray followed with two RBI.
- Sophomore Taylor Quinn added two hits and one run.
- Redshirt-senior Kate Powers pitched the complete game with six strikeouts. Neither of the Black Bears' runs were earned.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Caitlyn Frederick led off the first with a well-laid bunt to get on base.
- Taylor Quinn followed with a single to right center but was left on base.
- Kate Powers and the defense retired the Black Bears in order, including two strikeouts for Powers in the second inning.
- The Great Danes quickly put two runners on as freshman Charlotte Lomb walked and Frederick earned her second bunted single in the bottom of the third.
- After Lomb scored on a throwing error, Mary Kate Murray hit a single through the left side for two RBI and a 3-0 Great Dane lead.
- Maine loaded the bases in the top of the fifth but two force outs from the UAlbany defense left three runners on base and held the 3-0 advantage.
- Junior Sara Anderson and freshman Ava Beal, pinch-hitting, walked to get on base in the bottom of the sixth.
- With two outs on the board, Frederick hit her first career home run into the bushes behind right field to give the Great Danes a 7-0 lead.
- Maine got the last say with two runs in the top of the seventh but a final strikeout from Powers ended the game with a 7-2 score in UAlbany's favor.
GAME TWO

KEY STATS
- Senior Christie Collins and Mary Kate Murray tallied two hits in the second game to lead the team.
- Murray totaled a team-high three RBI while Collins drove in two runs.
- Frederick led with two runs for the second game in a row.
- Freshman pitchers Hayley Wieczerzak and Hailey Errichiello shared time in the circle. Wieczerzak totaled six strikeouts in 4.1 innings. Errichiello closed out the game with five strikeouts in 2.2 innings for the win.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Once again, Caitlyn Frederick led off the Great Danes' batting efforts with a bunted single.
- Christie Collins and Taylor Quinn advanced Frederick to third with groundouts before she scored on a double from Mary Kate Murray.
- Through two innings, Hayley Wieczerzak had struck out five of the seven batters she faced.
- In the top of the third, a Black Bear attempted a sacrifice bunt but the UAlbany defense was on high alert and turned a double-play with the shallow bunt attempt. Junior Sara Anderson picked it up and threw to junior Deanna Grahek at second who then passed to freshman Charlotte Lomb at first.
- Maine took a 2-1 lead in the fourth inning and added a third run in the top of the fifth.
- With three consecutive singles in the bottom of the fifth, the Great Danes tied the score at three.
- Collins got on base first with an infield single. Taylor Quinn followed with a single to right center and, with two runners in scoring position, Murray hit the ball to right field for a single and two RBI.
- The Black Bears loaded the bases with three consecutive singles in the top of the sixth but Hailey Errichiello caught the batter looking and ended the inning with a strikeout.
- UAlbany put two runners on base with two outs in the bottom of the sixth. Stealing second, Frederick made it so both her and freshman pinch-runner Sara Scozzari were in scoring position.
- Collins singled up the middle to drive in what proved to be the game-winning run. After both Scozzari and Frederick scored, Collins was called out during a rundown play.
- Three quick outs for the UAlbany defense and the Great Danes secured the 5-3 win for the doubleheader sweep.
