Softball Splits Doubleheader at Army

SHORT STORY: The Great Danes opened the doubleheader with an extra-inning win but Army closed the day with a seventh-inning comeback to split the series, Wednesday.
 
GAME ONE

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Caitlyn Frederick hit the first single of the day in the top of the first.
  • Kate Powers struck out her first batter in the bottom of the first as the Black Knights went down in three.
  • UAlbany drew two walks and Deanna Grahek hit a single in the top of the second to load the bases but Army did not allow the Great Danes to score.
  • The Black Knights hit their first single in the bottom of the second. The UAlbany defense turned a double play to end the inning with just three batters.
  • Taylor Quinn and Sara Anderson added singles throughout the rest of the seven innings but the score remained tied at zero at the end of the seventh.
  • Freshman Sara Scozzari started the eighth on second base and immediately advanced to third as Ava Beal got on base with a bunt.
  • Quinn followed with her second single to drive in Scozzari and advance Beal to third.
  • Army closed the inning and left two Great Danes in scoring position to hold the UAlbany lead at one.
  • Ending the game with two runners on, the Great Dane defense held to win the contest, 1-0, in eight innings.

KEY STATS
  • Deanna Grahek led the team with two hits in three at bats, two runs, and two RBI. Getting the first run of the game, she hit a home run.
  • Taylor Quinn followed with two hits in four at bats and one run. She added the second, and final, extra-base hit with a double.
  • Sara Anderson, sophomore Mary Kate Murray, and senior Christie Collins each added a hit.
  • Freshmen Hayley Wieczerzak and Hailey Errichiello shared time in the circle. Wieczerzak pitched 5.0 innings with six strikeouts. Errichiello pitched the final 1.2 innings.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Army tallied the first hit of the game before putting a second runner on base in the bottom of the first.
  • Sara Anderson answered for UAlbany with a single in the top of the second.
  • Going scoreless through three innings, both teams hit a single in the second and third innings.
  • Deanna Grahek opened the fourth inning with a home run over the right-center field fence to give the Great Danes a 1-0 lead.
  • Hayley Wieczerzak struck out to end the fourth and hold UAlbany's lead.
  • Taylor Quinn started the sixth inning with a double and Grahek drove her in to make it 2-0. Mary Kate Murray added an RBI as the Great Danes ended the sixth inning with a 3-0 lead.
  • The Black Knights came back to win the game in the bottom of the seventh.
  • After starting with a home run, they added two consecutive singles to put runners on base.
  • A fielding error allowed the second runner to score with Army eventually adding two RBI for the 4-3 decision. 
 
NEXT: The Great Danes will begin conference play at Binghamton with a three-game series (Mar. 22-23).
