Second-Half Comeback Leads to Women's Basketball Victory

SHORT STORY: The Great Danes outscored Bryant in the second half, 32-18, to come back from a halftime deficit and remain undefeated at home, Thursday night. 
 
COACH COLLEEN MULLEN: "Tonight was a gritty win for our team. I loved the fight and defensive effort we showed coming out of the halftime break. Kayla [Cooper] had another outstanding game and put the team on her back to help us get this win. The team showed tremendous resilience and made big plays down the stretch."
 
KEY STATS
  • Graduate student Kayla Cooper led with 24 points, three assists, and three steals.
  • Graduate student Lilly Phillips led with four rebounds while sharing Cooper's lead with three assists. 
  • Fellow graduate students Jessica Tomasetti and Kaci Donovan neared double-digits with eight points each.
  • Four Great Danes added three rebounds each - Tomasetti, Donovan, Cooper, and junior Gabriela Falcão.
  • For the second consecutive game, Cooper made nine field goals for single-game percentage over 50%.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Bulldogs got off to a strong start and accumulated a five-point lead within the first few minutes of the game. 
  • After Bryant's initial dominance both teams settled into a rhythm where they exchanged points back and forth for most of the first quarter. 
  • UAlbany entered the second quarter down 16-10 due to a strong start from the Bulldogs. 
  • A strong defense from both teams allowed just four points each throughout much of the second quarter.
  • In the last two minutes of the second, Bryant outscored UAlbany, 5-2. The Bulldogs entered halftime with a 25-16 advantage. 
  • The Great Danes came out of the break with a fire on both sides of the court.
  • Kayla Cooper put up a six-point run to kick off the third quarter which cut Bryant's advantage to a mere three points, 25-22. 
  • Shortly after, UAlbany tallied six consecutive points to take its first lead of the game, 28-27, with 3:33 remaining in the third.
  • Holding the Bulldogs to just two points in 10 minutes, the Great Danes finished the quarter with a final layup from Gabriela Falcão. 
  • Bryant attempted to fight back throughout the entirety of the final quarter but UAlbany held on both sides of the court to keep their lead.
  • Outscoring the Bulldogs, 18-16, in the fourth, the Great Danes earned the 48-43 win at home.
 
NEXT: UAlbany will play at Vermont with hopes to sweep the Catamounts in the regular season for the first time in Colleen Mullen's tenure.
