Short Story: The University at Albany men's basketball program defeated UMBC on the road 78-74.

Coach Dwayne Killings: "We're getting better in some different ways. I think mentally, the last time we played, we were losing a lead, and we panicked. This time, we got where we started to lose the lead, and our guys knew we were winning the game, and it came down to winning plays.

  • Byron Joshua led UAlbany with 22 points, shooting 7-13 (53.8%), 4-8 (50.0%) from the three, and 4-5 (80.0%) from the line in 37 minutes of play.
  • Justin Neely recorded a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds.
  • Amar'e Marshall (11) and Kheni Briggs (10) both tallied double-digit points.
  • Kacper Klaczek tallied nine points and 10 rebounds.
  • Amar'e Marshall and Langford Jr. recorded two steals each.
  • Marshall and Klaczek made four assists each as UAlbany finished with 16 total assists.
  • The Great Danes went 28-61 (45.9%) from the field, 10-24 (41.7%) from the three-point line, and 12-18 (66.7%) from the free-throw line.
 
How it Happened:
  • UAlbany started off the contest with a 9-4 run led by four points from Bautista Giralt.
  • The Great Danes' next three makes would come from beyond the three to stay ahead 18-13 with 13:36 to play in the first with two of the three threes coming from Kheni Briggs.
  • The third three came from Neely and sparked an 11-6 run and a 26-19 lead over the Retrievers.
  • A 10-4 run by UMBC throughout three minutes would make it a one-point UAlbany lead, 30-29.
  • The Great Danes closed out the first with a 13-7, highlighted by nine points from Byron Joshua to put UAlbany ahead 43-36 entering the half.
  • A dunk from Giralt would start the second half as the Purple and Gold propelled to a 50-40 lead, with the help of a three from Amar'e Marshall five minutes in.
  • UMBC would find their way back into the game, going on a 10-3 run throughout 2:30 as UAlbany led 53-50 with 12:19 to play.
  • UAlbany and UMBC would keep pace with one another as a three from Amar'e Marshall and a dunk from Kacper Klaczek helped the Great Danes keep a 63-58 lead.
  • With four minutes left in the game, UAlbany pulled ahead 73-64.
  • The Retrievers fought their way back, tying the game 74-74 with 43 seconds to play.
  • DeMarr Langford Jr., Joshua, and Klaczek helped close out the game as the pair combined for four free throws to give UAlbany the 78-74 win.
