SHORT STORY: The Great Danes came from behind to gain a double-digit lead and beat Maine on the road, Thursday night.
COACH COLLEEN MULLEN: "The game was a great example of this team's passion, resilience, and fight. The Pit at Maine is a hard environment to play in and Maine is a very disciplined team. Our defense was tremendous in holding Maine to just 40 points. The players competed for four quarters and executed the game plan with confidence. We had a balanced effort and Jessica [Tomasetti] was outstanding. There is a lot to build on from this win."
KEY STATS
- In a career night for graduate student Jessica Tomasetti, she tabbed a season-high 17 points and a career-high 12 rebounds to lead the team with a double-double.
- Fellow graduate student Kayla Cooper led with five assists and two steals.
- Tomasetti followed Cooper closely with four assists while freshman Delanie Hill tied with Cooper with two steals.
- Four student-athletes hit 50% of their shots. Freshman Martina Borrellas led with a 75% accuracy from the field (3-4).
- A true team contest, all Great Danes on the court scored a field goal or notched a rebound. Eight out of nine players who saw action tabbed at least two points against the Black Bears.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Both teams started with a focus on defense as the score was tied at four after nearly six minutes of action.
- The Black Bears gained traction and completed a 10-2 scoring run to hold the lead, 12-6, with two minutes left in the quarter.
- UAlbany got the last say with two field goals to make it a 12-10 game after 10 minutes.
- Holding Maine scoreless, the Great Danes finished what proved to be a 14-point scoring run through the first half of the second quarter.
- Scoring remained back and forth for the rest of the half as UAlbany entered halftime with a 26-21 lead.
- As the team returned to the defensive play of the first quarter, neither team surpassed 10 points in the third quarter.
- UAlbany held the Black Bears to just four points while scoring nine to advance their lead and head into the final quarter with a double-digit lead, 35-25.
- The fourth quarter started with back-and-forth action as both teams battled.
- A three-point play from Jessica Tomasetti returned the Great Danes to a double-digit lead, 44-33, with 6:45 remaining.
- Maine continued to try to hold off UAlbany and take the lead but the Great Danes were able to hold their own and increase the score.
- With 18 seconds left, Tomasetti got the final say and made it a 56-40 decision in UAlbany's favor.
