Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Lindsey Scores 20 as Men's Basketball Drops Season Opener at Marquette

Score: UAlbany 53, Marquette 80

Location: Fiserv Forum | Milwaukee, Wisconsin

Records: UAlbany (0-1, 0-0 America East), Marquette (1-0, 0-0 Big East)

Short Story: The University at Albany men's basketball team fell on the road to Marquette in their season opener, 80 to 53, after trailing 30 to 21 at halftime.

Coach Dwayne Killings: "I was honored to bring our team here. Our staff worked really hard to build a roster we believe can win the America East. Marquette is disruptive, well-coached, one of the best programs in the country, and Shaka does an unbelievable job. We wanted to face a team that would pressure and try to turn us over. We responded pretty well to start, came out of the locker room with a big three, and then we did not respond again and got worn down. It is a learning lesson for a group still trying to figure it out and grow. We were down four or five bodies and a few guys stepped up."

Key Stats:

  • Amir Lindsey led the Great Danes with 20 points on 7-for-17 (41.1%) shooting and 3-for-8 (37.5%) from three, adding eight rebounds and three assists.
  • Okechukwu Okeke posted 10 points on 4-for-4 (100%) with seven rebounds and two blocks.
  • Zacharie Matulu recorded seven points and a team-high 10 rebounds.
  • Jaden Kempson grabbed eight rebounds with four assists and three steals.
  • UAlbany totaled 28 points in the paint, 18 second-chance points, and 43 rebounds, with 19 coming off the offensive board.
  • The Great Danes competed with the Golden Eagles off the glass, with UAlbany 43 rebounds to Marquette's 45 rebounds.

How it Happened:

  • Amir Lindsey canned a right-wing three on UAlbany's first trip to make it a 3-1 start.
  • Marquette answered with a quick burst to go up 12-7 before the Great Danes settled in defensively.
  • Okechukwu Okeke stopped the run with a putback dunk, then added a short jumper as UAlbany kept it within one score for several minutes.
  • Tarique Foster knocked down back-to-back threes on opposite wings to answer Marquette's makes and keep the deficit inside ten.
  • Okeke scored the final four UAlbany points of the half, trimming it to 30 to 21 at the break.
  • To open the second, Lindsey drilled a three at the top to cut it to six before Marquette responded with a quick spurt that restored a double-figure margin.
  • The Golden Eagles added points in transition during the middle segment, but UAlbany answered with its largest run, a 6-to-0 burst fueled by second-chance buckets to steady the game.
  • Lindsey followed with a driving finish and a pull-up to cap a personal five-point stretch as the Great Danes continued to attack the paint.
  • Zach Matulu controlled the glass during a late sequence, extending two possessions that led to second-chance points.
  • The Great Danes finished the game on a 7-5 run, with the Golden Eagles besting UAlbany 80-53.
