SHORT STORY: The Great Danes jumped to an early lead in their second consecutive game to earn their second America East victory, Saturday afternoon.
COACH COLLEEN MULLEN: "This was a great road win against a scrappy UMass Lowell team. We got off to another strong start and allowed our defense to create opportunities for us in transition. The players made big plays at key moments to push the lead and finish the game strong."
KEY STATS
- Graduate student Lilly Phillips led the team with 15 points and two blocks.
- Fellow graduate students Kayla Cooper and Kaci Donovan followed closely with 14 points each.
- Both Cooper and Phillips shot 6-10 from the field.
- Cooper notched team-high with five rebounds and three assists.
- Junior Gabriela Falcao led with three steals.
- As a team, UAlbany held the River Hawks to zero three-pointers (0-13).
HOW IT HAPPENED
- UMass Lowell opened the contest with a 6-2 run but the Great Danes did not allow another River Hawk point throughout the remainder of the first quarter.
- UAlbany ended the quarter with 15 points in five minutes to earn a double-digit lead, 17-6, in just 10 minutes of action.
- During the Great Danes' 15-point first-quarter scoring run, Lilly Phillips scored nine points.
- The River Hawks came out of the break with a fury and held UAlbany scoreless while scoring 12 consecutive points in over six minutes to take an 18-17 lead.
- Once again, the Great Danes did not allow another UML point until the third quarter while taking back its lead. UAlbany entered halftime with a 26-18 advantage.
- Similar in fashion to the end of the first quarter, the second quarter scoring run belonged mostly to Kaci Donovan. She scored seven of the Great Danes' nine points.
- Throughout the third quarter, the two teams played for back-and-forth points.
- UAlbany gradually extended their lead to 12, 36-24, in just over four minutes of play.
- After a three-point play by Phillips at 5:43, neither team added a field goal throughout the remainder of the third.
- Five different shooters added five different field goals, including two three-pointers, while the Great Danes continued to extend the scoring gap in the fourth quarter.
- UMass Lowell got the final say with a layup from Abbey Lindsey at 0:13 but UAlbany had already secured the victory.
NEXT: The Great Danes will return home to host two consecutive contests - New Hampshire (1/9) and Maine (1/11).
