Second Half Surge Lifts Women’s Soccer to Opening Night Victory

Short Story: The University at Albany women's soccer team scored three goals in the second half to claim a 3-1 victory over visiting LIU to start the season.

Head Coach Sade Ayinde: "It always feels great to get a win at home! We responded well from being down a goal and are hoping to bring that momentum into our next match on Thursday. Really proud of our group for working together to pull out a result, and shoutout to our three different goal scorers."

How it Happened:
  • The Sharks had an opportunity within the first minute, finding the back of the UAlbany net early on. However, the would-be goal was called offsides to keep it scoreless early on.
  • LIU took a 1-0 lead in the 21st minute on a score from Gina Proviano, ripping it in from 15 yards out.
  • The Great Danes nearly tied it in the 33rd minute on a corner kick from Madison Hnis that hit off the crossbar.
  • Starting keeper Emily Dorfman kept it a 1-0 game for UAlbany just moments later, making a key save in the bottom left corner of the goal.
  • LIU's Panagiotakopoulos hit the UAlbany crossbar in the 43rd minute, missing an opportunity to increase the lead for the Sharks.
  • UAlbany registered seven shots in the first half, five of which were on goal. LIU registered 11 shots with three being on goal.  
  • Sydney Kofton tied the game for the Great Danes as the clock struck 49 minutes, hitting a header on a perfect feed from Madison Wisheart.
  • Not even two minutes later, Hailey Hnis scored on a free kick from nearly 30 yards out to put UAlbany in the lead, 2-1.
  • The Great Danes made it 3-1 in the 64th minute after Madison Hnis sent a perfect ball to Casey Stowell, who buried it for the first goal of her career.
  • LIU's Matiana Valdez was given a red card in the 83rd minute.
