How it Happened
- The University at Albany women's lacrosse team took its two-game winning streak down to Baltimore on Saturday for a matchup against 7-4 UMBC. Last season's game between the teams went down to the wire, with the Great Danes pulling out a 15-14 victory in Albany.
- At the time of Saturday's opening draw, UAlbany and UMBC were the top two teams in the circle this season in the America East. Both teams averaged over 16 per game, with the Retrievers pulling down 16.55 and the Great Danes 16.09. Individually, the teams boasted the top four players on the draw in the conference in UMBC's Lauryn Warfield (6.45) and Kolby Weedon (5.45), and UAlbany's Katie Pascale (5.73) and Haley Phalines (5.36).
- The Great Danes won the opening draw, picked up by Megan Dineen, and Pascale drew a free-position attempt just 18 seconds into the game. Pascale's shot missed wide, and UMBC's transition effort in the other direction found the back of the net for the early Retriever lead.
- UMBC won the second draw of the game and added to their lead after drawing a free-position attempt, going up 2-0 with 13:00 left in the first. Just over three minutes later, UAlbany got on the board when freshmen Mikaela Mooney and Paisley Cook connected to cut the Retrievers' lead in half.
- UMBC scored again before Grace McCauley scored back-to-back goals, assisted by Ava Poupard and then by Pascale, to tie the game at three with 3:46 left in the first. Pascale's first assist of the day brought her career points total to 298.
- Pascale's 299th career point came with 11:52 in the second, an unassisted goal to put the Great Danes ahead 4-3. UMBC responded by scoring the next two of the game to take a 5-4 lead with 6:31 before the break.
- With 3:43 remaining in the second quarter, Katie Pascale netted an unassisted goal for her 300th career point, to tie the game at five. Pascale split two UMBC defenders, beat a third, and outmaneuvered the Retrievers' goalkeeper with a fourth defender sliding to help. Pascale reached the milestone in her 67th game, on 159 goals and 141 assists.
- UMBC regrouped to score the final two goals of the half to take a 7-5 lead into the break. The Retrievers had outshot UAlbany 14-4 in the second quarter, putting eight on target.
- Megan Dineen and Ava Poupard each scored in the first four-and-a-half minutes of the third quarter to tie the game at seven, but UMBC scored four goals in less than three minutes to take an 11-7 lead into the final frame. Pascale ended the Retrievers'' run with 12:16 remaining, but UMBC responded just under four minutes later to maintain their four-goal advantage.
- With 5:53 remaining, Pascale scored her fourth goal of the afternoon, closing UAlbany within three. Fifteen seconds later, Pascale found Kloey Roos, who spun to beat her defender for another score to cut the Great Danes' deficit to two.
- UMBC's defense held up over the next five-and-a-half minutes, with Pascale forcing two turnovers to keep UAlbany's chances alive. Roos scored a final goal with five seconds remaining, but UMBC won the final draw, their only such win in six opportunities in the fourth quarter, to clinch a 12-11 upset victory.
- UMBC had outshot UAlbany 8-4 in the third quarter, for an advantage of 22-8 over the game's middle 30 minutes. But UAlbany rallied to outshoot UMBC 15-3 in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Retrievers 4-1 over the final 15 minutes.Â
Game Notes
- Katie Pascale is the first member of the UAlbany women's lacrosse program to score 300 points in a career. She is the third Great Dane man or woman to do so, after Lyle Thompson (400) and Connor Fields (364) from the men's program. She is the fifth woman in America East history to reach 300, and is the fourth active Division I women's player to do so.
- UAlbany suffered its first America East regular-season defeat since losing to Stony Brook on April 30, 2022, to a team other than Stony Brook since falling to Boston University on April 7, 2012, and to an active America East member institution since UMBC on March 24, 2012. UMBC snapped a 13-game losing streak in the series.Â
Next: UAlbany hosts UConn on April 13.
