SHORT STORY: Defeating Western Michigan and falling to Quinnipiac, the Great Danes split day one at the Spring Games.
GAME ONE
RECORDS: UAlbany 2-3, 0-0 America East | Western Michigan 4-5, 0-0 MAC
SCORE: UAlbany 7, Western Michigan 2
KEY STATS
- Redshirt-sophomore Natasha Mendez and sophomore Deanna Grahek led with two RBI each.
- Graduate student Morgan Petty tallied her first home run of the season. Grahek made it two Great Dane homers with her first career home run.
- Seven different student-athletes tallied one hit.
- Graduate student Wendi Hammond pitched a complete game with six strikeouts.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Caitlyn Mitros opened the game earning a base on balls.
- Western Michigan's leadoff batter tallied the first hit of the game before scoring a run to give WMU a first-inning lead.
- Wendi Hammond tallied two strikeouts in the bottom of the second but the Broncos took a 2-0 lead after two innings.
- Making their way quickly through the third inning, the Great Danes scored three runs in the fourth to take the lead.
- Starting with a home run from Morgan Petty, Natasha Mendez added an RBI with a hard hit up the middle before sophomore Sara Anderson scored the third run.
- Holding WMU to two runs, Hammond caught up a line drive before completing a double play with an out at first.
- After a scoreless fifth inning, Mendez added an RBI with a sac fly before Grahek made it six Great Dane runs with a home run.
- Junior Caitlyn Frederick scored what proved to be the final run of the game in the top of the seventh.
GAME TWO
RECORDS: UAlbany 2-4, 0-0 America East | Quinnipiac 3-1, 0-0 MAAC
SCORE: Quinnipiac 3, UAlbany 1
KEY STATS
- Redshirt-junior Victoria Vilarchao led the team with the lone RBI.
- In addition to Vilarchao's single, Sara Anderon and Deanna Grahek added hits.
- Junior pitcher Dominique Prevette started the game in the circle. She pitched 5.0 innings with four strikeouts. Wendi Hammond pitched the final two innings with two strikeouts.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Quinnipiac started the scoring in the first inning with a single run.
- Making her way through the second inning, Prevette struck out two of the three Bobcat batters.
- UAlbany tied the score in the bottom of the fourth when Morgan Petty scored from first on Victoria Vilarchao's single to left field.
- The Bobcats earned the advantage with two runs in the top of the sixth.
- Getting on base with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, Anderson and Grahek each hit a single.
- Leaving two on base, the Great Danes were unable to tie the score and Quinnipiac took the win, 3-1.
NEXT: The Great Danes will continue the Spring Games with two contests on Saturday (Mar. 2) - St. Bonaventure and Monmouth.
