Petty Grand Slams, Softball Adds Two Spring Games Victories

SHORT STORY:
Earning early leads in both games, the Great Danes battled it out to win two contests on Saturday in Madeira Beach, Fla.
 
GAME ONE
 
RECORDS:
UAlbany 3-4, 0-0 America East | St. Bonaventure 0-7, 0-0 A10
 
SCORE: UAlbany 10, St. Bonaventure 7
 
KEY STATS
  • Graduate student Morgan Petty tallied two home runs, one a grand slam, with seven RBI to lead the Great Danes.
  • Graduate student Caitlyn Mitros totaled team-highs with three hits and three runs in three at bats.
  • Freshman Mary Kate Murray added a 1.00 batting average going 3-3 at the plate.
  • Graduate student Maddi Petrella notched a solo home run.
  • Pitchers Wendi Hammond and junior Dominique Prevette combined for the team win with Hammond earning the victory in the circle.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After getting three outs in three batters to start the game, Caitlyn Mitros got on base right away.
  • Graduate student Wendi Hammond pitched two strikeouts in the top of the second before Mary Kate Murray tallied the first Great Dane hit to get on base.
  • SBU earned the first run(s) with two in the top of the third.
  • UAlbany answered to take a 5-2 lead at the end of the inning.
  • Loading the bases with junior Caitlyn Frederick, Mitros, and senior Jordan Nastos, Morgan Petty hit the ball over the fence. The outfielder's grand slam gave the Great Danes a 4-2 lead with no outs.
  • Maddi Petrella followed it with another homer to extend the lead.
  • Just one inning later, Petty added her second home run with two base runners for an additional three Great Dane runs.
  • Pinch-hitting, freshman Kristina Langdon drove in Petrella for the ninth run.
  • An SBU home run in the top of the fifth inning closed the scoring gap to 9-5.
  • Mitros scored what proved to be the final UAlbany run of the game in the bottom of the fifth on a single from redshirt-freshman Natasha Mendez.
  • The Bonnies got the last say with two runs in the bottom of the seventh but it wasn't enough and the Great Danes earned the 10-7 victory.

KEY STATS
  • Going 2-3, sophomore Deanna Grahek led at the plate. She notched one of two multi-base hits against the Hawks.
  • Morgan Petty totaled two hits, including a double, with one RBI.
  • Maddi Petrella owned a team-high with two RBI from one hit.
  • Wendi Hammond pitched the entire game on her way to her second win of the day.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Great Danes quickly put two on base as Caitlyn Mitros walked and Morgan Petty singled up the middle.
  • Just as quickly, UAlbany put two runs on the board when Maddi Petrella hit a single up the middle and drove in both Mitros and Petty.
  • Monmouth tied the score in the bottom of the first.
  • After getting three consecutive outs in the field, the Great Danes added two runs in the top of the fourth to take the advantage.
  • Petty earned a double to drive in Mitros for her second run of the game.
  • Two batters later, Mary Kate Murray sent Petty home for the fourth UAlbany run.
  • The third and fourth innings saw three batters and three outs for the Hawks.
  • In the bottom of the fifth and the sixth, the Great Dane defense held runners on base to continue with a two-run lead.
  • Closing out the game, UAlbany went three up, three down in the field to hold off any additional attempts from the Hawks and won, 4-2.
 
NEXT: The Great Danes will close out their weekend at the Spring Games against Sacred Heart on Sunday (Mar. 3).
