Women's Basketball Comes Out on Top in Defensive Battle

SHORT STORY: The Great Danes held New Hampshire to just 40 points to secure the series sweep over the Wildcats, Thursday night.
 
COACH COLLEEN MULLEN: "This was a gutsy, gritty, and tough road win. UNH pressed and changed defenses which never allowed us to settle in and get comfortable offensively. Our defensive effort and focus was the difference maker tonight and I couldn't be more proud of this team."
 
KEY STATS
  • Graduate student Helene Haegerstrand led the team with 14 points, including two three-pointers.
  • Junior Meghan Huerter followed with 12 points, nine of which were scored from downtown.
  • Haegerstrand and freshman Deja Evans shared the lead with seven rebounds each.
  • Graduate student Sarah Karpell, Haegerstrand, and Evans held a team-high with three assists while Karpell and Cooper led with three steals each.
  • With the victory, the Great Danes have clinched at least the two-seed in the America East Tournament.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Off to a strong start, the Great Danes outscored the Wildcats, 14-10, in the first quarter.
  • Opening with six points in the first three minutes of action, UAlbany held a 6-2 lead early on.
  • The beginning proved to be the difference as back-and-forth scoring ensued for the rest of the opening quarter.
  • New Hampshire held the advantage after the entirety of the first half with a 14-6 second quarter.
  • Tallying three consecutive baskets, the Wildcats took a 17-14 lead at 7:15.
  • The Great Danes reclaimed the advantage, 20-19, four minutes later but a 5-0 scoring run for New Hampshire made it a 24-20 game at halftime.
  • UAlbany came out of the break with a fire, allowing just three points (one basket) in the third quarter.
  • With three three-pointers in the mix, one from Helene Haegerstrand and two from Meghan Huerter, the Great Danes scored 14 points in the third quarter to gain a 34-27 advantage.
  • Despite outscoring UAlbany, 13-11, the Wildcats were unable to recover in the final quarter.
  • Scoring the first two baskets of the fourth, UNH closed the gap to 34-31 in 81 seconds.
  • The Great Danes answered with five points for a 39-31 lead. 
  • Trading points for the final minutes of play, UAlbany was able to hold off the Wildcats enough to secure the victory.
 
NEXT: The Great Danes will close out the regular season at Maine on Saturday (Mar. 2). The winner of the competition will be named the America East Regular-Season Champion and claim the one seed for the AE Tournament.
