How it Happened
  • Despite losing the opening tip-off, the Great Danes gained an early 5-4 advantage after the first three minutes of play thanks to baskets from Aaron Reddish and Sebastian Thomas.
  • Coming out of the first media timeout, the Retrievers jumped to a 9-5 lead on the back of strong defensive pressure. UAlbany responded with Thomas leading an 8-2 scoring run to take a two-point lead with 13:25 on the clock.
  • UMBC regained the lead as the two sides went back and forth, trading baskets mid-way through the first half. With nine minutes remaining, the Retrievers held a 21-18 advantage.
  • With 5:58 remaining in the first half, Thomas scored a driving layup to tie the game at 27. However, the Retrievers responded with a quick three to retake the lead.
  • UMBC closed out the half with a 6-2 scoring run to take a 39-36 lead into the break. Thomas led UAlbany in scoring with 19 points from 53.8% shooting, followed by Reddish with eight.
  • As a team, the Great Danes shot 37.1% (13-35) from the field while going 5-15 from behind the arc. The Retrievers shot 50% (15-30) while going 3-10 from three.
  • UAlbany came out in the second half controlling the paint on both sides of the court. Heading into the first media break of the half, the Great Danes held a 46-45 advantage.
  • Following a UAlbany timeout, UMBC broke out on an 8-2 scoring run to regain control of the momentum and take the lead, 53-50, with a little over 12 minutes remaining.
  • The contest broke out into an offensive display as the two sides began trading baskets. However, the Retrievers slowly grew their lead to five, 65-60, with less than six minutes remaining.
  • Breaking out on a 10-2 scoring run, UMBC earned the first 10-point lead of the afternoon as they looked to put this game away with 3:58 on the clock.
  • The Great Danes remained resilient, scoring nine consecutive points as they fought back, cutting UMBC's lead to 72-71 with 1:42 remaining.
  • UMBC held on to win the contest, 80-75. Thomas finished with a game-high 30 points from 50% shooting.
