Men’s Basketball Falls at Fordham

Short Story: The UAlbany men's basketball team traveled to the Bronx on Saturday afternoon where they fell to the Fordham Rams in the final game before holiday break, 87-84.
 
Coach Dwayne Killings: "I think they're [Fordham] a good team, but I think we could be better than them, and then I thought we came out, we executed, we score. now, all of a sudden, we make it a one-possession game, and we did that a couple of times, and we cut it to one. We turn the ball over two times… I thought we just lost our focus sometimes."
 
Key Stats:
  • Amar'e Marshall led the Great Danes with a season-high 24 points shooting 10-18 (55.6%) from the field.
  • Justin Neely recorded the most rebounds with eight.
  • Byron Joshua dished out five assists for a team high.
  • DeMarr Langford Jr. denied a total of two shots in the contest.
  • Marshall and Neely both led UAlbany with two steals each.
  • UAlbany shot 31-63 (49.2%) from the field, 7-16 (43.8%) from beyond the arc, and 14-18 (77.8%) at the free throw line.
 
How it Happened:
  • Fordham opened the game with a 5-0 run before a flagrant foul by Romad Dean of the Rams sent Joshua to the line, where he converted two to make it a 5-2 game at the 18:13 mark.
  •  After trading baskets, the Great Danes tied the game 7-7, following five points from Amar'e Marshall with 16:12 to play.
  • Fordham would go on a 10-2 run pushing them ahead 17-9 with 14:42 remaining in the half.
  • Six straight points from Marshall followed by a layup from Amir Lindsey cut UAlbany's deficit to two, 19-17 with 12 minutes on the clock.
  • A 12-4 run by the Rams would see their lead grow to 30-19 just over halfway through the first.
  • The Great Danes would storm back with an 11-2 run, highlighted by a three-pointer from Byron Joshua, cutting their deficit to 34-33 with 4:18 to go in the first.
  • Fordham would end the first half on a 12-2 run to take the 46-35 lead.
  • UAlbany started the second half with an 11-6 run, bringing them back within two scores, 52-46.
  • Trailing 54-36 with 15:06 to play, Marshall and Byron Joshua hit back-to-back three followed by two successful free throws from Justin Neely to tie the game at 54 with 13:11 to play.
  • The Rams would answer with five unanswered points to go ahead 59-54 before a UAlbany timeout at 12:29.
  • The Great Danes would continue to fight, trading baskets with the Rams before Fordham recorded a three and a free throw with 8:02 remaining to lead 70-62.
  • UAlbany would cut its deficit to five, 72-67, following a jumper from Marshal;l at 6:08.
  • The Rams would answer back with a 9-2 run to lead, 81-69 with 3:15 to play.
  • A Late 10-3 by the Great Danes brought them back within one point 84-83 with 17 seconds left to play.
  • Fordham would end the game by making three free throws as and take the 87-83 victory.
 
UP NEXT: UAlbany's men's basketball will return home on Sunday, December 29, to renew its rivalry with former America East member Stony Brook who joined the Coastal Athletic Association in the summer of 2022. It will be the final game for the Great Danes in 2024 with tipoff scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
