SHORT STORY: Kaci Donovan joined the 1000-point club and
Kayla Cooper hit 1500 career points as the Great Danes beat Boston U, Tuesday evening.
COACH COLLEEN MULLEN: "This was a bounce forward game for us. I'm so proud of the way our players responded and came out tonight with a high level of intensity, exceptional effort, and a focused defensive mentality. Kaci [Donovan] had an unbelievable performance and Kayla [Cooper] was relentless on the glass. Everyone contributed and was locked into our game goals for four quarters."
KEY STATS
- Graduate student Kaci Donovan led with a career-high 30 points while shooting nearly 70% (11-16), including four three-pointers.
- Graduate student Kayla Cooper tabbed a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds while also leading with four assists.
- A third graduate student, Jessica Tomasetti made it three Great Danes in the double-digits with 12 points.
- Senior Abby Ray totaled a team-high three steals with freshman Martina Borrellas leading with two blocks.
- As a team, the Great Danes totaled nine steals and scored 30 points off turnovers.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Boston University jumped to an early 7-2 lead.
- UAlbany answered and took an 8-7 lead but the Terriers made two field goals to re-take the lead, 13-8, with 3:29 remaining in the first quarter.
- The Great Danes ended the quarter with a 10-point scoring run to take an advantage they would not lose throughout the remainder of the game.
- BU scored first in the second but seven consecutive points from UAlbany gave them a 10-point lead, 25-15.
- The Great Danes gradually extended their lead and earned a 36-19 advantage after a three-pointer from Martina Borrellas at 1:59.
- Neither team was able to score throughout the rest of the quarter and UAlbany entered halftime with a 17-point lead after allowing just six points from the BU offense in the second quarter.
- UAlbany opened the third quarter and continued what proved to be a 13-point scoring run to take a 44-19 lead at 5:52.
- The Terriers offense continued to score throughout the next six minutes of action but were only able to earn 10 points in the third quarter.
- With 2:16 remaining in the third, Kayla Cooper tallied her 1500th career point with a layup to give UAlbany 50 points and a 26-point advantage.
- Up nearly 30 points to start the final quarter, both teams scored seven points in the first four minutes.
- Kaci Donovan started what proved to be an eight-point scoring run with her 1000th career point from a layup at 5:44.
- Donovan and senior Meghan Huerter ended the game with a three-pointer each to make it a 36-point win for the Great Danes.
NEXT: The Great Danes will return home to host St. Bonaventure in the first of a UAlbany doubleheader on Saturday (Dec. 14).
