Men’s Basketball Claims Albany Cup for Second Consecutive Year

Short Story: UAlbany and its crosstown rivals Siena competed for the Albany Cup on Saturday night which saw a battle for the ages that resulted in the Great Danes proving to be the bigger dogs over Siena.
 
Coach Dwayne Killings: "I'm proud of our team. I thought that was a great win and an unbelievable atmosphere. The work that our marketing team, Deputy Athletic Director Vic Cegles, and Athletic Director Mark Benson, were able to do to put together felt like a playoff-like atmosphere… and I think we showed that both our program in the America East and, Siena's program in the MAAC can win a championship."

  • With 21 points and eight rebounds, Justin Neely was the highlight of the Great Danes offense.

How it Happened:
  • Amar'e Marshall scored the first basket of the contest to give the Great Danes an early lead.
  • Peter Carey tied the match for Siena 2-2 1:15 into the match.
  • Both teams traded points before a coast-to-coast layup from Byron Joshua extended UAlbany's lead to 10-6 with 15:43 remaining.
  • Five straight points from Justin Neely helped the Great Danes it's their lead at 15-11.
  • With 8:16 remaining in the half a layup from Kacper Klaczek kept UAlbany ahead 17-11.
  • The Great Danes would take a 28-26 lead entering the half, highlighted by four points from Amar'e Marshall.
  • Falling behind 31-30, jumpers from DeMarr Langford Jr., Aaron Reddis, and Neely helped the purple and gold recapture its lead 35-33 with 11:58 to play in the second half.
  • With a deficit of one at 36-35, Kheni Briggs hit a three as UAlbany would go ahead 38-36.
  • A layup from Klaczek and two successful free throws from Neely pushed the lead to 44-40 with 9:07 remaining.
  • In a back-and-forth battle, an 8-2 run allowed UAlbany to go ahead by five 56-51 as 4:26 remained in the second half.
  • Two layups from Neely and another from Amir Lindsey and Byron Joshua propelled UAlbany to its largest lead of the half, 64-55. With 1:22 remaining.
  • A 12-3 run by UAlbany sparked a huge end with Kacper Klaczek throwing down a windmill dunk for the final basket of the game as UAlbany walked away victorious 70-60.

UP NEXT: The Great Danes will take a trip down to San Juan, Puerto Rico, and compete in the 2024 Puerto Rico Classico in a three-team tournament against Puerto Rico Mayuegüez, American, and Kansas City. The event will be held over the span of three days from November 22-24
