SHORT STORY: Kayla Cooper and
Jessica Tomasetti led the team for the second consecutive game to give the Great Danes a 58-53 win over Dartmouth, Wednesday night.
COACH COLLEEN MULLEN: "This was a hard-fought road win. I'm very proud of how the players battled all game. They came up with some big plays when they needed to. We will learn and get better from this game."
KEY STATS
- Graduate student Kayla Cooper totaled 20 points and three steals.
- Graduate student Jessica Tomasetti followed with 14 points while notching a team-high four steals.
- Two Great Danes led with six rebounds each - graduate student Kaci Donovan and freshman Martina Borrellas.
- Freshman Delanie Hill and senior Meghan Huerter totaled two assists each.
- As a team, UAlbany totaled more offensive rebounds (19) than defensive rebounds (17).
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Dartmouth earned the first field goal but UAlbany answered with seven points from Kayla Cooper.
- After trading points for about two minutes, the Big Green scored six unanswered points to tie the score at 12 and end the first quarter.
- In the second quarter, the Great Danes held Dartmouth scoreless for nearly seven minutes.
- Allowing just three field goals in a two-minute span, UAlbany earned a 26-19 lead heading into halftime.
- The action went back and forth in the third quarter.
- Helped by a last-minute basket from junior Gabriela Falcão, the Great Danes slightly outscored the Big Green, 16-13, to take a double-digit lead, 42-32, into the final quarter.
- Scoring 21 points, Dartmouth had its best quarter in the fourth.
- Freshman shooter Tahira Muhammad hit two three-pointers and two free throws to help her team tie the score at 51 with just over three minutes remaining in the game.
- Shortly after the contest was tied, the officials assessed a technical foul to Dartmouth. Graduate student Lilly Phillips had two good free throws to give the Great Danes the lead back.
- The Big Green earned a good layup to tie it up at 53 but Jessica Tomasetti answered with a jumper in the paint on the next possession.
- A layup from Cooper and another free throw from Phillips, along with team defense to force Dartmouth to miss three shots, including two three-pointers, in the final two minutes sealed the victory for UAlbany, 58-53.
NEXT: The Great Danes will return home for a second doubleheader on Saturday, November 16. The women will play Sacred Heart with a 2 pm tip.
