#14 Field Hockey Clinches Hosting Rights, Defeats Maine

SHORT STORY: Scoring two goals before the end of the third quarter, the Great Danes clinched the right to host the America East Tournament, and at least a share of the Regular Season Champion title, with a win at Maine, Friday evening.

COACH PHIL SYKES: "Great battle today. It's always a tight game against Maine. I'm very proud of the team today. There was a lot riding on this game and we were fortunate to get out of there with the win."
 
KEY STATS
  • Four different Great Danes earned points against the Black Bears.
  • Senior Blanca Orsola and freshman Eva Jenniskens each scored a goal.
  • Graduate student Charlotte Triggs and senior Floor de Ruiter added to their assist totals.
  • As a team, UAlbany outshot Maine, 18-9, with a 13-5 advantage in shots on goal.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After a scoreless first quarter, the Great Danes earned a 1-0 lead at halftime with a goal from Blanca Orsola.
  • Restarting the ball after a foul, senior Alison Smisdom passed to Charlotte Triggs. Triggs saw Orsola in the circle and passed for a one-touch shot from the senior.
  • About five minutes into the third quarter, UAlbany debuted a new penalty corner to score the second goal.
  • Eva Jenniskens tipped a pass from Floor de Ruiter for the score with 10:18 on the clock.
  • Maine closed the scoring gap with a goal in the fourth quarter but it was not enough as the Great Danes earned the victory to remain undefeated in conference play.
 
NEXT: UAlbany is set to return home to host Senior Day as they highlight 12 student-athletes against Colgate (Oct. 27).
