SHORT STORY: From the very beginning, the energy in the gym was radiant. The Great Danes started strong and continued to play as a team in the back-and-forth contest to earn their 13th straight victory and remain undefeated in conference play.
COACH COLLEEN MULLEN: "Maine is a talented team and I am extremely proud of how the players executed a very detailed game plan. We handled their runs and showed a tremendous amount of resilience heading into the fourth quarter. We were able to come up with key stops and convert big offensive plays down the stretch. This was a great team win."
KEY STATS
- Freshman Deja Evans came back from injury to shoot 70% from the field leading to a team-high 17 points and six blocks.
- Graduate student Sarah Karpell followed with 14 points while adding a team-high three assists.
- Senior Kayla Cooper made it three players with double-digit points with 10 points.
- Graduate student Helene Haegerstrand led with nine rebounds.
- The Great Danes held the Black Bears to a field goal percentage of 28.1 percent.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Despite a steal from the Black Bears on the first possession, the Great Danes tallied the first points with a three-pointer from Lilly Phillips.
- After nearly three scoreless minutes, Maine took the lead with its second field goal but UAlbany tied the score at five on the next possession.
- Holding the Black Bears scoreless for over six minutes, the Great Danes took an 11-5 lead with six unanswered points.
- Maine had the last say in the first quarter with a three-pointer at 23 seconds left.
- Adding three consecutive field goals and holding the Black Bears scoreless for nearly four minutes, UAlbany opened the second quarter strong.
- Maine gradually closed the scoring gap with an 8-2 scoring run but the Great Danes returned to a six-point lead after a Deja Evans layup and free throw with 3:40 on the clock.
- Trading points to finish out the first half, UAlbany entered halftime with a 26-19 lead.
- The third quarter proved to begin with back-and-forth action but five unanswered points, including three free throws, from the Great Danes made it a 10-point game, 35-25, at 5:50.
- Maine brought it back to a two-possession game with just over two minutes of strong defense and two field goals.
- The Black Bears completed what proved to be a 9-0 scoring run to make it a one-point game, 35-34, with one quarter remaining.
- Tallying three layups in just under four minutes, the Great Danes got the fans on their feet with a five-point lead, 41-36, at 6:30.
- UAlbany's quarter-opening 6-2 scoring run proved to be the difference as the team traded baskets throughout the remainder of the contest.
- Up 49-42 with just over a minute remaining, the Great Danes held off the Black Bears' attempts to take the lead with five successful rebounds to win 54-47.
