Short Story: The University at Albany men's basketball team trailed by as much as 18 points to the Maine Black Bears in Orono on Thursday night, storming all the way back but ultimately falling short on the road.
Key Stat Lines
- Sebastian Thomas led all UAlbany players in scoring with 20 points, going 6-15 from the field and 8-8 from the free throw line. He also had a team-high four assists and two blocks.
- Jonathan Beagle finished with his ninth double-double of the year, 14 points and 13 rebounds in 32 minutes.
- Amar'e Marshall (15) and Ny'Mire Little (10) were the final Great Danes to finish in double figures.
- UAlbany finished the game shooting 50.9% (28-55) from the field and 31.3% (5-16) from three. Maine shot 50% (29-55) from the field and went 8-16 from three.
- Maine won the rebounding battle, 37-27. UAlbany finished with 15 turnovers, Maine with 18.
Head Coach Dwayne Killings: "All credit to a really good Maine team in a really hard place to play… I think we show a little bit of character in our ability to come back, but we can't put ourselves in that situation… We learned a hard lesson, but we have a quick turnaround against a really good New Hampshire team."
How it Happened:
- Maine jumped out to a 10-3 lead to open the game, but the Great Danes were able to cut the deficit to two, 10-8, before the first media timeout. Jonathan Beagle came off the bench and immediately contributed with points in the paint, giving space for Marcus Jackson to drop one from deep.
- UAlbany took the lead after scoring 11 straight points, 14-10. A three from Maine's Feierbergs ended the drought with 13:05 remaining in the first.
- The teams traded buckets with Maine holding a one-point advantage, 26-25, with 6:48 remaining in the first half. Aaron Reddish found the rim for the Great Danes and dropped four points, but Maine's Feierbergs single-handedly kept the Black Bears in it, going 3-3 from three while scoring 11 points.
- Maine went into the locker room at halftime with a four-point lead, 38-34. UAlbany shot 51.9% (14-27) from the field and 33.3% (2-6) from three in the first half. Maine had the same numbers from the field but went 5-8 from three to maintain the four-point lead.
- Jonathan Beagle led all UAlbany players with 11 points, going 5-8 from the field. The sophomore struggled from the free throw line though, shooting just 1-6.
- Maine came out of the locker room hot, taking a nine-point advantage at 47-38, the team's largest lead of the night at that point. The Great Danes were aggressive from the start, registering four team fouls in the first four minutes.
- Maine pushed the lead to 15 points, 60-45, with 13 minutes remaining before Amar'e Marshall was able to drive the lane for an uncontested layup.
- A 17-4 run for the Great Danes got the team right back into the ball game with four minutes remaining. After trailing by 18, UAlbany cut the lead to just five points, 71-66. Sebastian Thomas led the charge for the road team, crossing the 20-point mark once again.
- The Great Danes were able to get within three points of Maine but were unable to completely close the gap. Trips to the foul line sealed the game for the Black Bears.
- UAlbany shot 50% (14-28) from the field and 30% (3-10) from three in the second half. Maine shot 53.6% (15-28) from the field and 37.5% (3-18) from three.
