SHORT STORY: Three Great Danes led with double-digit point totals as UAlbany defeated UMass Lowell, Thursday afternoon.
COACH COLLEEN MULLEN: "The team fought extremely hard for 40 minutes to earn this road win. It was a loud environment and UML plays a scrappy style. Our players remained composed and executed at a high level. Our defense was spectacular for three quarters.
Kayla Cooper had another outstanding performance on both ends. I'm very proud of the resiliency of this team."
KEY STATS
- Senior Kayla Cooper led the Great Danes with 22 points and nine rebounds.
- Graduate student Helene Haegerstrand followed with 15 points and six rebounds while holding game-highs with five assists and four blocks.
- Graduate student Sarah Karpell added 10 points, three assists, and a team-high two steals.
- As a team, the Great Danes went 26-48 for a .542 field goal percentage with a 63.6% accuracy from the three-point line (7-11).
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Trading points to begin the game, the game was tied at six after five minutes of action.
- UAlbany closed the first quarter with a 10-2 scoring run, including seven unanswered points in the final 93 seconds of the quarter.
- Heading into the second quarter with a 17-8 lead, the Great Danes gradually extended the point gap throughout the quarter.
- Holding a 12-point lead, 24-12, with 4:19 on the clock, UMass Lowell tallied four consecutive points to close the lead but a five-point scoring from the Great Danes secured a double-digit point lead, 29-16, heading into halftime.
- UAlbany and UMass Lowell both added to their point totals with back-and-forth two-basket runs throughout much of the third quarter.
- An eight-point scoring run from the River Hawks closed the gap to 43-36 in the Great Danes' favor.
- UAlbany got the last say with a last-second field goal to close the third quarter.
- After going back and forth to start the final quarter, the Great Danes put three consecutive baskets on the board to return to a double-digit point gap, 56-42.
- The River Hawks kicked up the offensive action for the final four minutes of action but it was not enough as UAlbany earned the 65-49 win.
NEXT: The Great Danes are set to close a three-game road stretch at Bryant on Saturday (Jan. 20).
