How it Happened
- The University at Albany men's soccer team returned for the first time to Durham, N.H. and the site of their 2022 America East title game against the defending champion Wildcats. New Hampshire was ranked #24 in the latest United Soccer Coaches national poll after playing Binghamton to a scoreless tie in their America East opener last weekend.
- In the 13th minute, Alejandro Giner intercepted a clearing attempt by New Hampshire's defense. He took a dribble and fired a shot from the top left corner of the Wildcats' box, but missed just wide of the near post into the side netting.
- Overall, the first half played out relatively evenly. New Hampshire took the first shot of the game, but UAlbany took the next three over a period of five in-game minutes. Giner's shot in the 13th was the only one the Great Danes put on target in the first period, while New Hampshire didn't put an effort on frame until the 40th, saved by Shafique Wilson, returning to the starting lineup.
- Mohamed Soumah quickly attacked the New Hampshire defense early in the second half with a shot in the 48th minute that missed wide of the mark. The Wildcats kicked up the pressure from there, taking each of the next four shots. The first was blocked by the Great Danes' defense, and Wilson saved each of the next three.
- The Great Danes created a promising opportunity in the 76th minute, forcing New Hampshire's goalkeeper, Joseba Incera,  to make two quick saves. First, Alex Pechacek's shot was saved, but the rebound bounced right back to Ander Castillo crashing the goal line. Castillo got a touch on the ball but Incera, now on the ground, reached out to prevent the ball from crossing the line.
- The back-to-back shots from Pechacek and Castillo were the last for either team in the game. New Hampshire did draw three of their 10 corner kicks in the 86th minute and beyond, but the Great Danes' defense held firm and none of the three produced a quality opportunity for the Wildcats.Â
- Friday's result ends a three-game losing streak in the series for the Great Danes, who last beat the Wildcats in the 2019 season, at home on senior night. Over the last 15 games in the series, 11 have been decided by one goal or fewer.
Next: UAlbany visits Cornell on October 3.
