SHORT STORY:
The Great Danes battled back and forth with the Dragons but the host team got the edge in shootouts, Sunday afternoon.

COACH PHIL SYKES:
"Tough game today. It was a good battle with a tough Drexel team. Having a one-goal lead late and not managing the game hurt us. We will learn from this one and get better."

  • For the second-straight game, all three UAlbany goals were unassisted.
  • Junior Alison Smisdom led with two goals.
  • Junior Floor de Ruiter added her second goal of the season.
  • The Great Danes outshot the Dragons, 21-12, with a 10-8 advantage in shots on goals.
  • For the first time since the 2022 season, UAlbany did not score one of their goals during a penalty corner. Their last game without a penalty corner goal was against Maine on September 25, 2022.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Drexel tallied the first goal in the fourth minute of action.
  • The Great Danes took the lead with two goals in the second quarter.
  • Taking the ball from a Dragon, Floor de Ruiter dribbled about 20 yards towards the goal before flicking the ball past the goalkeeper.
  • Less than two minutes later, with 32 seconds on the clock, Alison Smisdom put a successful penalty stroke attempt into the net for the second score.
  • The Dragons tied the score just over two minutes into the second half.
  • In the 40th minute of action, Smisdom stole the ball during a Drexel pass and dribbled into the circle before sending a rocket of a pass into the net.
  • Drexel once again tied the score in the fourth quarter to send the game into overtime.
  • After two scoreless overtime periods, the Great Danes and the Dragons battled it out in shootouts.
  • UAlbany missed the first two attempts while Drexel notched three-straight goals.
  • Graduate student Delphine Le Jeune and senior Charlotte Triggs put their shots behind the goalie but after the fifth attempt did not make it in, the Dragons took the shootout victory.

NEXT: The Great Danes return home to begin conference play with California on Friday (Sept. 22).
