Women's Volleyball Battles in Virginia

LOCATION: Recreational Athletic Complex - Fairfax, Va.
 
SHORT STORY: The Great Danes battled hard on the second day of the Patriot Invite but were unable to earn a win, Saturday.
 
COACH JOSH PICKARD: "Overall, there were a lot of positives on the weekend. We played well as a team and grew as a young group. Kendall [Harris] was a steady force for us on the right and she was able to hit a larger variety of sets this weekend."
 
GAME ONE

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The first set began with back-and-forth play before the Blue Raiders gained an edge with three unanswered points.
  • MTSU furthered its lead with an 8-1 scoring run for a 14-7 advantage.
  • UAlbany closed the point gap but the Blue Raiders were able to continue with the lead for a 25-16 set win.
  • MTSU opened the second set with seven unanswered points.
  • With a kill from freshman Kyrah Wilbur, the Great Danes and the Blue Raiders proceeded to trade points until MTSU gained a 21-10 lead with a 6-1 scoring run.
  • UAlbany added three points but the Blue Raiders finished the set, 25-13.
  • Similar to the second, the third set started with a 10-0 scoring run for MTSU.
  • The Great Danes earned a point but the Blue Raiders finished a 17-1 scoring run with seven additional points.
  • MTSU gained a 21-2 advantage with four unanswered points before closing the set, and the match, with a 25-9 score.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The two teams traded points in the beginning of the first set until the Great Danes took a 16-9 lead with a 6-1 scoring run.
  • The back-and-forth action continued but UAlbany's scoring run proved to be the end result with a final score of 25-16 in favor of the Great Danes.
  • Seattle opened the second set with a 4-1 scoring run.
  • With five unanswered points, the Great Danes tied the score and took a 9-6 advantage.
  • The lead went back and forth until the Redhawks gained a 6-1 scoring run for a 20-17 lead. Seattle closed it out with a 25-21 set win.
  • The Redhawks worked for an early scoring for a 9-4 advantage in the third set.
  • The Great Danes closed the point gap with three straight points before tying the score at 18 with a 5-1 scoring run.
  • Both teams continued to play back and forth until the Redhawks finished the set with three points in a row for a 27-25 set three victory.
  • The fourth set began close with UAlbany gaining a 13-7 advantage with five unanswered points.
  • After back-and-forth action, the score had been tied at 18.
  • The Great Danes gained a small lead, 21-20, but three straight points from the Redhawks made it a 23-21 game. 
  • Though the teams each scored two additional points, it was Seattle taking the fourth set, 25-23, and the match, 3-1.
 
NEXT: The Great Danes return home for their first single match of the season. They will host Siena on Wednesday (Sept. 20).
