How it Happened
  • After splitting their first two games at home to start the 2023 season, the University at Albany women's soccer team hit the road for the first time to visit three-time defending Ivy League champion Brown.  The Bears had yet to start their new season, but returned two 10-goal scorers from last year's team that won 13 games.
  • The Great Danes attacked early, with Olivia Piraino taking an open shot that tested Brown goalkeeper Bella Schopp just 11 seconds after the opening kickoff.  Brown's first shot came in the third minute, saved by Megan Hart to keep the game scoreless early.
  • The Bears scored their first goal in the eighth minute, putting away a serve off a corner kick into the far side.  In the 12th minute, Brown scored again to increase their lead to two.
  • Brown's third goal of the first half came in the 20th minute when Layla Shell beat Hart and the UAlbany defense off a rebound low and to the right.  It was Shell's second goal of the game.
  • Hart prevented a fourth Brown goal in the 23rd minute after a successful Bears through ball broke behind the Great Danes' defense.  Hart charged and made a kick save with her right foot, which was then cleared out of danger by Sophia DeMura.
  • Brown scored twice more after halftime, first in the 65th minute and one last time in the 87th.  The Bears went on to win by the same score, 6-0, giving the Great Danes their second loss of the season.
Next: UAlbany visits Boston University on August 27.
