Softball Grabs Offensive Game One Victory in Split Doubleheader

SHORT STORY: The Great Danes grabbed an early lead and continued to build upon it in a seven-run game-one victory before falling a two-run game two, Friday.
 
GAME ONE

KEY STATS
  • Junior Jordan Nastos and senior Morgan Petty led in the batter's box with four hits from five at-bats. Nastos notched two doubles and two singles and Petty totaled four singles.
  • Senior Caitlyn Mitros followed with three hits in four at-bats.
  • Senior Wendi Hammond hit her first home run of the season.
  • Graduate student Chloe Lewis led five Great Danes with multiple RBI. Lewis totaled three while Nastos, Petty, Hammond, and freshman Sara Anderson followed with two each.
  • Hammond served as the starting pitcher and pitched 5.2 innings for her 11th win on the season.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Jordan Nastos started the game right away with a double to right center.
  • Advancing two bases from a sacrifice bunt by Caitlyn Mitros and an RBI from Morgan Petty, Nastos grabbed the Great Danes' first run.
  • Leaving three runners on base, UAlbany held the River Hawks to just one run in the bottom of the first.
  • After a scoreless second inning, the Great Danes opened the third inning with three-straight singles from Nastos, Mitros, and Petty. 
  • Sara Anderson grabbed her first RBI with a single before Chloe Lewis added two RBI for a 4-1 UAlbany lead.
  • The Great Danes continued to add to their lead in the fourth inning.
  • Once again putting three on base, Morgan Petty notched her second hit, and the third-straight single to drive in freshman Deanna Grahek.
  • Anderson added an RBI with a groundout to second base.
  • UML hit a home run to close the lead to 6-3 after four full innings.
  • UAlbany continued to put runners on base with singles from Hammond and Grahek.
  • Nastos added two RBI with a double deep into right-center field as the Great Danes took an 8-3 advantage.
  • UAlbany notched four hits with four RBI to extend their lead to 12-3 in the top of the sixth.
  • Fretz and Lewis drove in a run each before Hammond knocked the ball over the center field fence for a two-run homer.
  • The River Hawks answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning to force the final inning.
  • The Great Danes tallied three-straight outs in the bottom of the seventh finish with a 12-5 victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The River Hawks tallied the first hit and the first run in the first inning.
  • After UAlbany retired three-straight batters in the bottom of the second, UML added a run in the bottom of the third inning.
  • Caitlyn Mitros was the first Great Dane on base with a bunted single in the top of the fourth.
  • UMass Lowell loaded the bases but UAlbany denied any runs in the bottom of the fourth with two outs at home.
  • Putting two runners - Chloe Lewis and Deanna Grahek - on base, Victoria Vilarchao took the batter's box pinch-hitting for freshman Kasey Conn. Hitting a deep single, Vilarchao drove in what proved to be the Great Danes' only two runs.
  • The River Hawks answered with two additional runs in the bottom of the fifth.
  • UAlbany added two singles from Petty and Fretz in the sixth but the base runners were left on second and third.
  • The Great Dane defense quickly retired three batters to head back to the dugout for the seventh inning.
  • Unable to get on base, UAlbany fell, 4-2, in the second game of the doubleheader.
 
NEXT: The Great Danes will close out the series at UMass Lowell on Saturday (April 29).
