Softball Falls in Rubber Match

The Great Danes tied the score late in the contest but were unable to come back from an eighth-inning score by UMBC, Sunday.

KEY STATS
  • Senior Morgan Petty led with two hits from three at-bats. With two triples, both hits served as the lone multi-base hits for the Great Danes.
  • Senior Maddi Petrella and junior Jordan Nastos notched one RBI each.
  • Graduate student Chloe Lewis tied Petty with two hits.
  • Senior Wendi Hammond pitched the first four innings with redshirt-sophomore Kate Powers closing out the contest.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Retrievers opened the game by putting three on base but the Great Danes held all three runners to head to the dugout for the first time.
  • Morgan Petty sent the first UAlbany hit deep into right field for a standing triple.
  • After a scoreless second inning and three-straight outs in the top of the third, Petty added a second triple to right field, with two outs on the board, before scoring the first run of the contest.
  • UMBC answered with two runs in the top of the fourth.
  • With two outs on the board, the Great Danes loaded the bases in the bottom of the fifth but they were unable to take advantage of the baserunners.
  • Before sophomore Caitlyn Frederick pinch ran for her, Chloe Lewis opened the bottom of the sixth with a single to left field.
  • After a stolen base from Frederick and a base on balls for sophomore Sierra Fretz, the Great Danes had baserunners on first and second.
  • Jordan Nastos tallied what proved to be the final hit of the inning to drive in the game-tying run, 2-2, with one inning left.
  • As neither team was able to score in the seventh, the game headed to extra innings.
  • The Retrievers took the lead with a one-run home run in the eighth.
  • UAlbany was unable to get a runner on base and tie the score as UMBC took the extra-inning win, 3-2.
 
NEXT: The Great Danes will head to Hartford for a midweek doubleheader on Thursday (April 20).
