Softball Splits Road Doubleheader

LOCATION: Hartford Softball Field - West Hartford, Conn.
 
RECORDS: UAlbany 15-16, 5-5 America East | Hartford 16-14 (unaffiliated) 
 
SHORT STORY: In a high-scoring doubleheader, the Great Danes split the day at Hartford with a game one victory and a game two loss, Thursday.
 
GAME ONE
 
SCORE:
UAlbany 10, Hartford 7
 
KEY STATS
  • Sophomore Sierra Fretz and redshirt-sophomore Victoria Vilarchao led the Great Danes with two RBI each.
  • Senior Caitlyn Mitros went 2-3 from the batter's box while junior Jordan Nastos and senior Wendi Hammond added two hits each.
  • Mitros also owned a team-high three runs with Nastos and senior Morgan Petty following with two each.
  • As a team, the Great Danes tallied four multi-base hits - one home run (Fretz), two triples (Nastos and Mitros), and one double (Hammond).
  • Hammond saw seven innings in the circle for the complete game win.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Great Danes opened the game with two-straight singles from Jordan Nastos and Caitlyn Mitros.
  • After advancing on a wild pitch, both Nastos and Mitros scored as a result of a fielding error.
  • Sierra Fretz followed it up with a two-run home run to left field to give UAlbany a 4-0 after the first.
  • In the top of the second, Nastos and Mitros once again tallied two-straight hits with triples.
  • Mitros and Morgan Petty added an RBI with their respective hits as the Great Danes extended their lead to 6-0.
  • In each of the next three half innings (bottom second, top third, bottom third), the respective team added one run.
  • Going into the fourth inning, UAlbany held a five-run lead, 7-2.
  • Pinch-hitting for Petrella, Victoria Vilarchao slammed a single through the right side and advanced two runners two bases each for an RBI.
  • Freshman Sara Anderson added an RBI as the Great Danes took a 9-2 advantage before the end of the inning.
  • The Hawks closed the lead with four runs in the bottom of the fourth.
  • Scoring came to a slight halt and UAlbany finished the fifth inning with a double-play to retire three players.
  • Petty scored what proved to be the final run off a groundout from Vilarchao in the top of the sixth.
  • The Great Dane defense went three up, three down, including a strikeout from Wendi Hammond, to secure the victory in the bottom of the seventh.

KEY STATS
  • Morgan Petty led the Great Danes with two RBI while going 2-4 in the batter's box.
  • Caitlyn Mitros and Jordan Nastos owned a team-high two runs each and added two hits in four at-bats each.
  • Nastos (one double) and Petty (one triple) notched UAlbany's multi-base hits.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • For the second-straight game, Jordan Nastos opened with a leadoff single.
  • Caitlyn Mitros made it to third on a two-error play before she crossed home with an RBI from Morgan Petty.
  • Hartford made it a one-run game in the bottom of the first.
  • After a scoreless second inning, the Hawks took a 4-2 lead with three runs in the bottom of the third.
  • The Great Dane defense tallied three-straight outs in both the second and fourth innings.
  • Hartford extended their lead to five runs, 7-2, in the fifth inning.
  • Mitros opened the sixth inning with the first UAlbany hit since the first inning.
  • Petty followed with a triple to send Mitros home before Anderson added an RBI as Petty crossed home.
  • The Great Danes loaded the bases but Hartford closed the inning with all three runners on base.
  • The Hawks answered with a run to hold an 8-4 lead after six innings.
  • Opening the top of the seventh with a double from Nastos, UAlbany added a run with an RBI single from Mitros.
  • Leaving one on base, the Great Danes were unable to tie the score before Hartford tallied three out and the Hawks took the game-two win, 8-5.
 
NEXT: The Great Danes are set to return home for a three-game series against new conference opponent, Bryant, on April 22-23.
