Softball Splits Day One in Florida

SHORT STORY: The Great Danes opened the day with an early win over LIU before falling to Southeastern Louisiana in their afternoon game, Friday.
 
GAME ONE

KEY STATS  
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Caitlyn Frederick opened the contest with a bunt to get on base.
  • Wendi Hammond started her day in the circle with a strikeout before the fielders did their job for a 1-2-3 inning.
  • In each of the first three innings, the Great Danes started with a hit. After Frederick's first-inning bunt, Maddi Petrella grabbed a single in the second and Schuyler Ossmann hit a double to open the third.
  • After a scoreless fourth inning, UAlbany picked up three runs in the fifth.
  • Pinch running for Chloe Lewis, after her single, Kasey Conn made her way around the bases before stealing home for the Great Danes' first run.
  • Junior Caroline Srokowski and Frederick scored during a Jordan Nastos single to bring the lead to 3-0.
  • After seeing just three batters in the sixth, the Sharks left one runner on base as Hammond ended the game with a strikeout for the victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Lions grabbed the first run in the top of the first.
  • Maddi Petrella hit the first Great Dane single in the bottom of the second.
  • SLU added two runs in the top of the third inning and a fourth run in the fourth inning.
  • Morgan Petty opened the bottom of the fifth with a single and Petrella got on base but the Great Danes were unable to take advantage of the base runners.
  • After a scoreless sixth inning, the Lions extended their lead to 8-0 in the final inning.
  • Jordan Nastos walked to open the bottom of the seventh but as UAlbany was unable to grab a run, Southeastern Louisiana took the win.
 
NEXT: The Great Danes will continue the Spring Games with two games, against Georgetown and Creighton, on Saturday (March 4).
