How it Happened
  • The University at Albany men's lacrosse team opened its America East slate on Saturday with a visit from the UMass Lowell River Hawks, UAlbany's fifth-straight game at home.  Last season, the Great Danes defeated UMass Lowell on the road in a 13-12 thriller, resulting in UAlbany goalkeeper Jack VanValkenburgh's first career victory.
  • Just over two minutes into the first quarter, Jacob Moran scored, unassisted, to put UAlbany on top early.  Next, just 31 seconds later, Declan Palandjian put away a goal off a setup from freshman Silas Richmond to put UAlbany up 2-0 before three minutes had elapsed.
  • The River Hawks scored the next two to tie the game at two with 8:53 remaining in the first quarter.  UAlbany responded by rolling off each of the next seven to lead 9-2 with 5:40 left before halftime.
  • During the 7-0 run, Graydon Hogg scored one goal and recorded one assist, the latter coming with 9:21 left in the second to set up TJ Sheehan.  The assist brought Hogg to 100 points for his career at UAlbany.  Hogg finished the day with two goals and two assists, and now has 102 career points behind 75 goals and 27 assists.
  • Also during this stretch, Richmond recorded a natural hat trick, scoring three-straight goals with 1:58 left in the first, 0:07 left in the first and 10:49 left in the second, with assists coming from Jake Piseno on the first and Peter Salit on the second and third.
  • Late in the second quarter, UMass Lowell took advantage of a man-up situation to end UAlbany's long run only to see Sheehan score with 20 seconds left in the half to put UAlbany up 10-3 at the break.  UAlbany then opened the third quarter with back-to-back goals to bring their latest run to three unanswered.  The third goal of the run came from sophomore Parker Winkky, notching the first goal of his career.
  • The River Hawks scored four of the next five goals to end the third quarter and cut UAlbany's lead to six, 13-7, heading into the fourth.  Over the final 15 minutes, UAlbany scored the only two goals, and claimed a 15-7 victory to kick off their 2023 America East slate.
  • UAlbany more than doubled-up UMass Lowell in shots taken, 52-25 over the course of the game, including an 18-5 stretch in the third, while the Great Danes' defense did not allow double-digit shots from the River Hawks in any quarter.  Regan Endres continued his hot streak at the faceoff X, winning 17 of 25 opportunities.
Next: UAlbany visits defending America East champion Vermont on March 25.
