How it Happened
  • The University at Albany men's lacrosse program took to the road for the first time since the season opener on February 10 to pay a visit to Burlington to open America East play against two-time defending champions Vermont.  The Catamounts defeated UAlbany twice last season, including in the America East semifinal round, and held a seven-game winning streak in the series.
  • The game began scoreless for the first six-plus minutes, before Vermont rolled off two-straight goals to take the lead with 8:48 and 8:20 remaining in the first quarter.  The quick, back-to-back scores spurred a five-goal run for the Catamounts, who led 5-0 to close the first quarter.
  • UAlbany did not get on the board until 5:33 in the second, when Jack Pucci put away a setup from Alex Pfeiffer to close to 5-1.  Vermont scored three minutes later to go back up by five, before Pucci set up Silas Richmond with 1:45 before halftime to bring UAlbany within four at the break.
  • Vermont had outshot UAlbany 9-5 in the first quarter, but the Great Danes flipped the script in the second to outshoot the Catamounts by the same margin.  Vermont did most of its damage at the faceoff X, winning at a rate of 6-0 in the first quarter and 3-1 in the second.
  • The Catamounts rolled off the first three goals of the third quarter to take a 9-2 lead with 7:59 to go before TJ Sheehan scored a man-up goal off a setup from Richmond.  Vermont then scored the next two, including one with 17 seconds remaining in the third, only to concede a goal to Amos Whitcomb just 12 seconds later to close the quarter with an 11-4 lead.
  • Vermont scored again just over a minute into the fourth quarter before Graydon Hogg scored back-to-back to bring UAlbany within six.  Vermont counted with back-to-back goals of its own, and Richmond, on a man-down, scored with 1:48 to go to bring the final score to 14-7 in favor of the Catamounts.
  • Vermont finished the game with sizeable advantages in faceoffs, 19-6, and in ground balls, 28-13, while outshooting UAlbany by a total of 35-28.  UAlbany took better care of the ball that the Catamounts, committing 16 turnovers to Vermont's 20.
Next: UAlbany returns home to host UMBC on April 1.
