Sierra Fretz, but were unable to earn a win on the first day of the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Leadoff batter, sophomore Caitlyn Frederick, notched the first hit of the season off the first at bat of 2023.
- Senior Maddi Petrella added a single to start off the second inning but was left on base, along with freshman Deanna Grahek at the end of the inning.
- The Hawks took a two-run lead in the third inning.
- Wendi Hammond led the Great Danes in the top of the fourth with two strikeouts from the circle.
- SJU hit a home run to add two runs for a 4-0 advantage in the top of the fifth.
- Grahek got on base with a walk in the bottom of the fifth and made it to third. Schuyler Ossman hit a single to third base which provided the opportunity for Grahek to score.
- Down 5-1 after a second homer from the Hawks, UAlbany had one inning left and two outs on the scoreboard when Hammond hit her single.
- Sierra Fretz followed with a double to drive Hammond into home for the Great Danes' second run.
- Leaving freshman Sara Anderson on base, a pinch runner for Fretz, UAlbany was unable to tie the score and fell, 5-2, to SJU.

RECORDS: UAlbany 0-2, 0-0 America East | Coastal Carolina 9-1, 0-0 Sun Belt
SCORE: Coastal Carolina 14, UAlbany 0 (5 innings)
KEY STATS
- Senior Morgan Petty earned the lone UAlbany hit against the Chanticleers.
- In two innings in the circle, graduate student Chloe Lewis pitched a strikeout.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Chants notched the first hit of the game in the bottom of the first inning.
- CCU took the lead with a two-run triple in the second inning.
- Coastal Carolina took a 14-0 lead after the third inning.
- Morgan Petty hit a single in the top of the fourth but was caught out at second base.
- Tallying three-straight outs, the Great Danes were able to hold off the Chanticleers in the bottom of the fourth.
- Despite connections with the ball from each batter in the fifth, UAlbany was unable to get anyone on base and CCU took the victory.
NEXT: The Great Danes are set to continue the Chanticleer Showdown tomorrow, Feb. 25, playing against Coastal Carolina and Mount St. Mary's.
