Men’s Basketball Drops OT Heartbreaker to Binghamton

Short Story: The University at Albany men's basketball team was unable to hang on late against SUNY rival Binghamton on Saturday afternoon, falling 80-66 in overtime. The Great Danes held the lead in the final minute, but a costly turnover was all the Bearcats needed to tie the game within the 20 seconds to force the extra period. The tight game between the two conference foes featured nine ties and three lead changes.

  • Gerald Drumgoole Jr. led all scorers with 21 points. He went 7-17 from the field, finishing with six rebounds and two assists.
  • Jonathan Beagle finished one rebound short of a double-double. The freshman posted 19 points and nine boards, also finishing with two assists, a steal, and a block.
  • Aaron Reddish dropped 11 points in 35 minutes of action, adding four rebounds.
  • Trey Hutcheson grabbed six rebounds in 32 minutes, posting four points.

How it Happened:
  • The Great Danes jumped out to an early lead, dropping the first six points of the game. Binghamton started the game going 0-3 from the field.
  • By the first media TO with just over 15 minutes on the clock, UAlbany pushed the lead to 10-2. Gerald Drumgoole Jr. accounted for seven of UAlbany's 10 points, hitting a three and converting on two layups.
  • The two teams exchanged three-pointers and layups before heading into the U12 media TO, the Great Danes with a 15-9 edge on the scoreboard. Aaron Reddish entered the game for UAlbany and hit a three-pointer for his first shot of the game.
  • The Bearcats were able to close the gap over the next run, pushing the score to 20-18 in favor of the Great Danes. Jacob Falko and Dan Petcash led the charge with six points each.
  • UAlbany was able to retain the lead late in the first, taking a 27-24 advantage into the final break before the half. With the game tied at 24, freshman Marcus Jackson hit a three-pointer to put the Great Danes back ahead.
  • Binghamton took its first lead of the afternoon with 1:30 left in the first on a Petcash three-pointer, 32-31.
  • Binghamton was able to retain the lead and take a 35-33 advantage into the locker room at the half. UAlbany shot 54.4% (12-22) from the field and went 3-8 from deep in the first half. Binghamton shot 55.6% (15-27) and went nearly perfect, 5-6, from deep.
  • UAlbany led for 16:31 of the first half, Binghamton led for just 1:33.
  • 14 of Binghamton's first half points came off of turnovers, whereas UAlbany only had two. The Great Danes coughed the ball up nine times, Binghamton eight times.
  • Binghamton outscored UAlbany 7-6 to start the second half, pushing the lead to a slim three points. The game was tied at 39 before Binghamton's Falko hit a wide-open three-pointer.
  • The lead was pushed to five points, 48-43, following a 6-4 run from the Bearcats with 11:57 remaining.
  • With eight minutes remaining, UAlbany tied the game at 52 following a drive to the lane from Marcus Jackson. The Great Danes retook the lead just a minute later on a Jonathan Beagle layup. The run to put UAlbany in the lead saw eight unanswered points from the Great Danes.
  • Coach Dwayne Killings called TO with his squad up 55-52 with exactly six minutes remaining.
  • A three-pointer from Binghamton's Armon Harried stopped a 12-0 UAlbany run. The bucket cut the UAlbany lead to four points, 59-54, with 3:29 remaining.
  • Up one with just over a minute remaining, Beagle drove the land before kicking it out to Drumgoole Jr. for a wide open three. The basket pushed the score to 63-59 in favor of the Great Danes with 1:15 remaining.
  • Binghamton forced a turnover within the final 20 seconds. Jacob Falko got a fast break, but was fouled by UAlbany's Drumgoole Jr. The foul sent Falko to the line with Binghamton down 63-61. He hit both free throws, giving UAlbany the final possession with 16 seconds remaining.
  • The Great Danes were unable to get a quality shot off before the buzzer, sending the game to overtime.
  • UAlbany shot 47.6% (10-21) from the field and went 2-6 from three in the second half. Binghamton shot 38.5% (10-26) from the field and went 2-7 from three.
  • Binghamton started overtime with two made three-pointers, one from Petcash and one from Falko, to take a 69-63 advantage.
  • The early hole was too much for UAlbany to overcome, as the Bearcats outscored the Great Danes 17-3 in the overtime period. UAlbany saw just a bucket from Drumgole Jr. and a free throw from Beagle.
