SHORT STORY: In a back-and-forth championship game, it was fourth-seed California earning an overtime win for the upset, Sunday afternoon.
COACH PHIL SYKES: "This was a game of different realms. I thought we had a lot of opportunities and good looks, we just couldn't capitalize. Their goalie and their defense played quite well. I am very proud of how our girls battled and did not give up. They had a lot of passion trying to get the back-to-back title, which is always tough.
SYKES ON THE SEASON: "It was a fantastic season in a lot of ways. I always look at it in three parts - beginning, middle, and end. I was so proud of how we grew and evolved throughout the year and put ourselves in this place. Anything can happen in these championship games, so we want to get to this position to have that opportunity [to win]. I am so proud of our team, of their effort … we had a good chance to win today. Sometimes, it just doesn't go your way. Hats off to Cal, they battled hard and finished the end of their season quite strong and I think they will represent us well in the NCAA Tournament."
