SHORT STORY: The Great Danes battled in a neck-and-neck contest with 11 ties and 24 lead changes but it was the host, Fordham, taking the Friday night win.
COACH COLLEEN MULLEN: "Gut-wrenching loss for our team tonight. It was a back-and-forth game the entire 40 minutes and, unfortunately, we were not able to close out the road win. We played tough and I'm very proud of our effort."
KEY STATS
- Senior Kayla Cooper led the Great Danes with an overall effort - 13 points, seven rebounds, and a team-high two steals.
- Graduate student Helene Haegerstrand totaled 14 points while freshman Deja Evans notched nine rebounds and three blocks to lead the team in their respective stats.
- Junior Meghan Huerter went 4-5 from the field, including 3-4 from outside the arc, for 11 points.
- Graduate student Sarah Karpell owned a team-high with five assists.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Rams earned the first points with two successful free throws on their first possession.
- UAlbany took a five-point lead, the largest in the contest, with an 11-2 scoring run.
- As the lead changed twice more in the first quarter, the Great Danes earned a one-point lead, 16-15, after 10 minutes of action.
- Trading baskets in the first half of the second quarter, the Rams earned the advantage but UAlbany took the lead with a three-pointer from Meghan Huerter before Fordham tied the score at 27.
- Seeing over three scoreless minutes, both teams compiled an additional seven points to enter halftime tied, 34-34.
- Coming back from the break, Deja Evans added three points with a layup and a free throw after two minutes without a basket from either side.
- The Great Danes maintained a one-point lead throughout the next three minutes of gameplay.
- With 4:45 on the clock, the Rams added a layup to take the lead before extending the scoring gap with a second layup at 2:02.
- Huerter closed out the quarter with a three-pointer to tie the game at 47.
- The fourth quarter began with strong defenses on either side. UAlbany broke the scoring halt with a jumper from Evans at 7:32.
- The two teams traded the lead for the next six minutes but Fordham gained a four-point lead with 32 seconds remaining after notching five straight points.
- Despite two baskets from Helene Haegerstrand - a jumper and a three-pointer - the Great Danes were unable to overcome the last-minute point difference and the Rams took the one-possession win.
NEXT: UAlbany is set to host their first home game at the College of Saint Rose on Monday (Nov. 13) night.
