Conference Battle Against UMBC Goes to Volleyball

SHORT STORY: The Great Danes held on to an early two-set lead to beat UMBC, 3-2, for their first conference win, Sunday evening.
 
COACH JOSH PICKARD: "Very proud of the way the team battled tonight. We came out and executed very well. We passed efficiently and that really opened our offense. Our block was taking up a lot of space which turned into more offensive opportunities."
 
KEY STATS
  • Redshirt-sophomore Shynelle Woroniuk led with 14 kills.
  • The Great Danes excelled on defense with 17 team blocks. Six different players contributed to the block total.
  • Freshman Campbell Robinson totaled nine blocks, including one solo, while redshirt-freshman Gabriella Karman and sophomore Anna Myhal followed with seven and six, respectively.
  • Junior Sthefany Carvalho owned a team-high 23 digs.
  • Junior Zosia Szczotkiewicz recorded a team-high four service aces while serving as the primary setter with 45 assists.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Retrievers tallied the first two points of the set but a 6-1 scoring run gave the Great Danes a 6-3 lead.
  • The two teams traded points for much of the first set. UAlbany pulled ahead, as senior Elisavet Papageorgiou served, with seven unanswered points for a 23-16 advantage.
  • UMBC attempted to close the gap but two final points from the Great Danes closed the set, 25-20.
  • The second set started with back-and-forth action but a three-point scoring run helped the Great Danes push ahead for a 7-6 lead.
  • After ties at every number between nine and 15, UAlbany took a 17-15 lead with three straight points.
  • Gradually gaining their advantage, the Great Danes closed the set, 25-22.
  • Similar to the first and second, the third set began with the two teams going back and forth. 
  • Earning a 7-1 scoring run, the Retrievers grabbed a 14-11 advantage.
  • UAlbany kept up but UMBC maintained its lead for the remainder of the third set to win, 25-22. 
  • As the three before, the fourth set began with the two teams trading points. 
  • The Retrievers jumped to a 13-6 lead with a 9-1 scoring run.
  • UMBC closed the fourth set with an 8-1 run, including five unanswered points, to secure the 25-13 set win.
  • In a battle for the match victory, the fifth set was the true definition of back and forth containing just two three-point scoring runs.
  • After the Retrievers earned the first point, the Great Danes gained a 5-2 advantage.
  • UMBC slowly closed the gap to take an 8-7 lead.
  • Going back and forth, the second and final scoring run worked in UAlbany's favor for an 11-9 advantage.
  • Trading points for the remainder of the set, the Great Danes battled to take the set 19-17, and the match, 3-2.
 
NEXT: The Great Danes will continue at home against Binghamton (Oct. 15) for the lone match of the week.
