How it Happened
  • The University at Albany women's soccer team hosted Vermont on Thursday night, in the team's 2023 finale.  The Great Danes had been eliminated from postseason contention following their previous game against UMass Lowell, and the Catamounts needed to win Thursday night to stand a chance at securing the sixth and final spot in the 2023 America East Tournament.
  • Before Thursday's game, the Great Danes hosted a brief ceremony honoring the members of their 2023 senior class: Iola Cotter, Megan Hart, Erin Kennelley, Ashley Ladner, Olivia Piraino, Brooke Pickett, Devon Schmitt, and Charlotte Takacsy.
  • UAlbany opened the game pressing high offensively, taking three shots in the first minute and 22 seconds after the opening kickoff.  All three attempts were blocked by Vermont defenders, and UAlbany's fourth shot, taken in the third minute, made its way through for a save by Catamounts' goalkeeper Erin Murphy.
  • In the 16th minute, Vermont drew a free kick off a foul by UAlbany's defense deep in Great Danes' territory, and just outside the box.  Bailey Ayer stepped up for the attempt and fired a shot low and toward the far post.  Her shot slid past UAlbany's wall and by Great Danes' goalkeeper Gabriella Terranova into the far side netting for the 1-0 lead.
  • Despite trailing 1-0, UAlbany held a narrow advantage in shots taken after the end of the first half, 7-6.  The Great Danes, however, had managed to put just one shot on target.  Each team had drawn three corner kicks in the first half, and had been called for two offsides violations.
  • Two minutes into the second half, Vermont notched a second goal.  Frances O'Donnell dribbled down the right side to the UAlbany baseline, and drew back into the box for Kate Bossert.  Bossert's shot towards the far post beat Terranova to put Vermont up 2-0.
  • Vermont scored a third goal in the 75th minute.  A throw-in from the right side from Abbey Knobel went to Fiona Doherty, who passed left to Sydney Remington.  Remington turned a shot towards the far post, out of the reach of a diving Terranova.
  • In the 77th minute, Tiffany Bernot was assessed a straight red card and UAlbany played the remainder of the game with 10 players on the field.
  • Vermont went on to win by the same score, 3-0.  The Catamounts locked down on defense after halftime and outshot UAlbany 9-1 in the second half.
Next: UAlbany's 2023 season has ended.  The America East Tournament begins October 29.
