How it Happened
- The University at Albany men's soccer team continued its late-season three-game road swing on Saturday with a visit to second-year America East program Bryant. The Bulldogs, through 14 games, had the best defense in the NCAA, conceding just three goals all season and recorded 11 shutouts.
- Bryant drew an early corner kick, just 16 seconds after the opening kickoff, and recorded the first shot of the game less than 30 seconds later. Bryant took three shots in the first 19 minutes, none of which were on target.
- The Bulldogs' fourth shot of the game found the back of the net. After drawing a free kick, the serve to the far post was redirected to Javier Gandia. Gandia outreached UAlbany's defense to push the ball into the open net to put the Bulldogs up 1-0 in the 26th minute.
- UAlbany didn't take a shot until the 28th minute, but their first shot equalized the score. A crisp sequence of passes through Bryant's defensive half left Alejandro Giner open in the Bryant box for the score, off the setup from Chris Lee and Ander Castillo. The goal was just the fourth conceded by Bryant all season.
- UAlbany's goal was also the first time the Bulldogs had surrendered a counter-punch, and so quickly, during the season. In every game this season, Bryant had not conceded a goal after scoring its first. The Great Danes join Vermont, New Hampshire, and Dartmouth as the only teams to score against the Bulldogs.
- In the 40th minute, Bryant retook the lead with a goal from Bayot Pitarch. Pitarch received a through ball at the to of the UAlbany box, turned, and took two touches to his left before firing off his shot, which beat UAlbany goalkeeper Shafiqe Wilson low and to the left.
- After the first 45 minutes, UAlbany had taken two total shots, but one of the shots had gone in for their score. Bryant had taken six, and controlled 57% of possession. Corner kicks were scarce, with the Bulldogs drawing the only one of the first half.
- Bryant scored a third goal in the 77th minute. After received a cross-field pass, Adrian Camacho took on UAlbany's defender himself into the right side of the Great Danes' box, and, after getting some separation, ripped his shot low along the near post for the score.
- Bryant held on to win by a final score of 3-1, clinching their 12th victory of the season. The Bulldogs finished the game outshooting the Great Danes 12-3, winning six corner kicks against UAlbany's zero, and controlling 59% of overall possession.
Next: UAlbany visits #16 Vermont on October 27.
