SHORT STORY: The Wildcats scored first but three Great Danes goals secured the victory, Friday afternoon.

COACH PHIL SYKES: "Very good effort today. We knew with UNH being in first place and their really good run this year, they were going to be tough to beat just because they were so confident coming in. For our girls to battle being down one and seeing a little adversity and then fight back and gain control of the game … very proud of that effort. I think as well as we played against UNC last Sunday, it is easy to have a little bit of an emotional letdown. We found our energy in the second period and got better in the third and the fourth. Overall, a very good effort by the team."

KEY STATS
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After a scoreless first quarter, the Wildcats scored just over four minutes into the second.
  • With 3:03 on the second-quarter clock, the Great Danes tied the score as Alison Smisdom sent the ball into the net. Assisted by Mara Küskes and Blanca Orsola, Smisdom scored the goal during a penalty corner with a stick stop from Orsola.
  • Averaging one goal per quarter in the second half, the Great Danes added two unassisted goals to secure the win.
  • Floor de Ruiter tallied what proved to be the game-winning goal in the third quarter. Dribbling the ball into the circle, de Ruiter stretched and dove to lift the ball over the goalie from about five yards out.
  • Adding a comfort goal about 90 seconds into the fourth quarter, Sophia Schoonmaker grabbed a rebounded shot during a corner to score the unassisted goal.
  • In a contentious final quarter with a strong offense from the Wildcats, UAlbany held off any possibility of scoring for the two-goal win.

NEXT: The Great Danes are set to host Lehigh for their senior day competition on Sunday (October 22).
