How it Happened
- Fresh off their most lopsided victory of the season, 4-0 over UMBC, the University at Albany women's soccer team embarked on their last road trip of the 2023 regular season, starting with their final non-conference opponent of the season, Cornell. UAlbany would play two games on the road before returning home for their regular season finale on October 26.
- UAlbany tested Cornell's defense first, with Selma Elverum, the reigning America East Women's Soccer Offensive Player of the Week, taking a shot low and to the right at the Big Red Goal. Cornell goalkeeper, Natalie Medugno, was positioned to make the early save.
- The Great Danes' defense did not give up a shot until the 11th minute, and UAlbany goalkeeper Gabriella Terranova, making her third-straight start, did not have to make a save until the 14th minute. Cornell, however, would go on to outshoot UAlbany 15-5 in the first half.
- Of Cornell's 15 first-half shots, seven were on frame. Terranova made six saves in the first half, but in the 15th minute, the Big Red broke through to go up 1-0.
- Cornell's shots advantage continued, and extended, in the second half, where the Big Red outshot UAlbany 15-3, for a total advantage of 30-8 for the full game. Additionally, Cornell's aggressive play resulted in 13 offsides violations and nine corner kicks, while the Great Danes were called for just three and won just three, respectively.
- UAlbany's defense and Terranova, who finished the game with a career-high 12 saves, held up against Cornell's barrage of shots until the 70th minute when the Big Red broke through to go up 2-0.
- Cornell added two final goals, back-to-back, in the 79th and 81st minutes to take a 4-0 lead. The Big Red did not let the foot off the gas, and took six additional shots following their fourth goal over a span of four-and-a-half in-game minutes, but, thanks to some big stops by Terranova, did not find the back of the net again.Â
Next: UAlbany visits UMass Lowell on October 22.
