Volleyball Stays in State for Cornell Invitational

ALBANY, N.Y. - The UAlbany women's volleyball team is set to play their third tournament in a row.
 
Returning to New York State, the Great Danes will head to Ithaca, N.Y. for the Cornell Invitational, September 9-10.

GREAT DANE REWIND
  • UAlbany opened the season at the JMU Invitational in Virginia before heading to Annapolis for the Kristen Dickmann Invitational, hosted by Navy.
  • In each of the three matches in Virginia, the Great Danes won one set. 
  • Throughout the season's two tournaments, newcomer Alexa Harris has come to lead the Great Danes with 3.19 kills per set while freshman Anna Myhal follows with 2.33 kills per set.
  • On defense, libero Charlotte Macken leads with 3.36 digs per set.
  • Sophomore Anissia Wong owns a team-high 16.0 blocks and 4.0 solo blocks
  • Freshman Zosia Szczotkiewicz started two matches and notched 8.80 assists per set.
  • Last season, the Great Danes finished with an 8-4 league record before closing the season at the America East Championship.
  • UAlbany returned eight student-athletes, including three starters, and add nine newcomers - Cassidy Bloom, Sadie Brown, Zeynep Ertam, Kaleigh Fitzgerald, Alexa Harris, Brooke Malek, Anna Myhal, Macey Salvione, and Zosia Szczotkiewicz.
 
ABOUT TEMPLE
  • The Owls opened the 2022 season hosting the Hilton Philadelphia at Penn's Landing Cherry and White Challenge. Temple split the weekend, taking a five-set win over Delaware after falling to Seton Hall.
  • At the Black Knight Invitational, the Owls went 2-1. Seeing victories over Army and St. Francis College Brooklyn on September 2, Temple fell to #20 Kansas State on the first day of the invitational (Sept. 2).
  • Taylor Davenport leads the offense with 3.95 kills per set. Jelena Prolic follows with 3.20.
  • Falanika Danielson (3.50 digs per set) and Samantha Jo Mikosky (17.0 total blocks) lead the team's defensive maneuvers.
  • Peyton Boyd owns a team-high six service aces.
 
SERIES AGAINST THE OWLS
  • UAlbany leads the all-time series, 5-1.
  • The Owls took the last meeting, 3-0, in 2017. This was their first win in the series.
  • The Great Danes have seen five wins since the first meeting in 2004.
 
ABOUT CORNELL
  • The host of the Cornell Invitational, the Big Red opened their 2022 campaign at the Kent State Invitational (Sept. 2-3). 
  • After one weekend of play, Cornell owns two wins over Kent State and Southern Indiana with a loss against Oakland.
  • Eliza Konvicka leads the offense with 2.80 kills per set while Emma Worthington serves as the team's setter, tallying 9.64 assists per set.
  • On defense, Megan Bickel owns 3.80 digs per set to lead the team and Sammie Engel has notched 10.0 blocks to lead on the net.
  • Engel has totaled 15 service aces for a team-high.
 
SERIES AGAINST THE BIG RED
  • Cornell holds a 5-1 lead over the Great Danes.
  • First meeting in 2000, with three Big Red wins, UAlbany's last meeting was the program's first victory. Hosting Cornell at the Crowne Plaza Albany - The Desmond Hotel Invitational, the Great Danes tallied a 3-1 win on September 4, 2021. 
  • Returning student-athletes Charlotte Macken (20 digs, two service aces), Malea Stanton (25 assists), and Anissia Wong (eight blocks) led with their respective statistics.
 
ABOUT COLGATE
  • The Raiders had visited California and North Carolina for two tournaments to begin the 2022 season before hosting Niagara for a three-set sweep on September 7.
  • After falling to Villanova and host #24 USC, Colgate beat UMBC, 3-0, in Los Angeles.
  • In their second tournament, the Raiders saw wins over Elon and Tennessee while falling to host, NC State.
  • Libby Overmeyer leads the team with 3.71 kills per set while Julia Kurowski serves as the main setter with 5.91 assists per set. 
  • On defense, Taylor Cigna owns 4.22 digs per set and Sophie Thompson owns 15.0 blocks to lead the team.
  • Cigna, Abby Shadwick, and Rachael Martinez are all tied for the team-high six service aces.
 
SERIES AGAINST THE RAIDERS
  • Colgate holds a 7-4 lead over the Great Danes in the all-time series.
  • UAlbany last faced the Raiders in 2021 for a 3-1 loss at home. Returning student-athletes Charlotte Macken (19 digs) and Malea Stanton (22 assists) led with their respective stats.
  • The Great Danes last beat Colgate, 3-0, in 2015 at the Colgate Classic.
 
UP NEXT
  • After competing at the Cornell Invitational, the Great Danes will host their first home game of the season. UAlbany is set to begin play against Marist at 7 pm on Tuesday, September 13.
