Volleyball Defeats Siena, Claims Capital Region

SHORT STORY: The Great Danes won the final three sets in a four-set match to defeat Siena for the fourth time in a row, Tuesday night.
 
COACH JOSH PICKARD: "It's always great to get a win against a crosstown rival. Siena pushed us and made us earn every point tonight. I'm very happy with Alexa and how she played; her offense really helped propel us tonight."
 
KEY STATS
  • Totaling 12 kills and 15 digs, junior Hannah Rowe led the Great Danes with her second career double-double and first of the season.
  • Leading on defense and offense, respectively, Alexa Harris (kills) and Charlotte Macken (digs) compiled 21 each of their respective stats.
  • Junior Kaleigh Fitzgerald led with four service aces while starting setter senior Malea Stanton tallied 49 assists.
  • Junior Sadie Brown led on the net with five total blocks.
  • Two Great Danes tallied three assisted blocks - Harris and Brown - while two Great Danes totaled two solo blocks - Brown and sophomore Anissia Wong.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After tallying the first point of the match, the Great Danes earned a 6-3 lead with a 3-0 scoring run.
  • Play continued back-and-forth before Siena took the lead and was the first to 15 with a one-point lead.
  • Kaleigh Fitzgerald notched the first service ace of the match to put the set within one point once again, 21-20, before the Saints took the first set, 25-22.
  • UAlbany scored three unanswered points to start the second set.
  • After two service aces from Fitzgerald, the Great Danes had earned a six-point advantage, 9-3.
  • Continuing to advance their lead, UAlbany was the first to 15 with an eight-point lead.
  • The set finished with back-and-forth play as the Great Danes won the second set with an eight-point margin.
  • UAlbany started the third set with a 5-1 scoring run to force an early timeout from the Saints.
  • Siena came back from the timeout to compile an 8-2 scoring run to take a 9-7 lead. The Saints continued with the slim advantage, eventually making it to 15 first with a three-point lead.
  • With a 4-0 scoring run, the Great Danes took an 18-17 lead before winning the close third set, 25-23.
  • The fourth set emphasized that back-and-forth play. When tied at 10, there had been four lead changes and nine ties.
  • The Saints were the first to 15, and beyond, with seven unanswered points.
  • UAlbany followed with a 7-0 scoring run to tie the score.
  • Trading points to close the set, the Great Danes earned the match win, 3-1, with a 25-23 fourth set victory.
 
NEXT: The Great Danes will open conference play on Friday at New Hampshire before hosting NJIT on Sunday.
