SHORT STORY: When two second-half goals led to a tie, it was a penalty stroke that proved the difference as UAlbany beat Cornell, Sunday afternoon.

COACH PHIL SYKES: "The team made a fantastic effort today. I think we had some good momentum after the last couple of games that helped. In practice, we've been emphasizing our team defense and making the [opponent's] team defense work harder, thus keeping our defense fresher. Our attacking was excellent, we just could not execute because their goalie played so well. She made some very nice saves to keep them in the game early. Even later in the game, we did not lose it mentally, we stayed focused. Cornell is a very good team and our girls have such respect for them that they will fight it 'til the end."

KEY STATS
  • Sophomore Alison Smisdom tallied the game-winning goal with her first penalty stroke of the season. She led the team with 13 shots, including eight on goal.
  • Graduate student Elaina Burchell scored her second goal in as many games.
  • The Great Danes outshot the Big Red, 28-9, with a 17-5 advantage in shots on goal.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • UAlbany turned up the fire from the very first whistle. Totaling eight shots in the first quarter alone, the Great Danes spent much of the first half in the circle.
  • Cornell answered by kicking up the pressure in the second quarter but neither team scored before halftime.
  • In a quarter that was more evenly played, both the Big Red and the Great Danes totaled multiple shots in the third. Cornell tallied four while UAlbany notched eight.
  • Elaina Burchell started the scoring late in the third quarter. In the 43rd minute of play, she received a pass from sophomore Blanca Orsola to send the ball behind the goalie and into the net.
  • With a 1-0 lead at the end of the third, the Great Danes continued to dominate in the circle and compiled 11 shots and nine penalty corners in the fourth quarter.
  • During a corner, the Big Red tied the score with less than five minutes to play.
  • In a series of Great Dane penalty corners, after two green cards were called on Cornell and one on a Great Dane, UAlbany drew a penalty stroke.
  • With 1:04 left in regulation, Alison Smisdom made the successful penalty stroke attempt to put UAlbany up by one goal, the game-winning goal.

NEXT: The Great Danes will face another Ivy League opponent, hosting Yale on Sunday, September 18.
