Jimenez, Fretz Lead as Softball Defeats Maine in Series Opener

LOCATION: Albany Field - Albany, N.Y.
 
RECORDS: UAlbany 13-11, 2-2 America East | Maine 5-25, 1-2 America East
 
SHORT STORY: After a three-hour delay, the Great Danes and the Black Bears took the field. UAlbany won the first game, 5-1, before the teams began the second game of the weekend series, Saturday. 
 
GAME ONE

KEY STATS
  • Senior Maranda Jimenez led from the plate. Going 2-3, both of her hits tallied multiple bases - a double and a home run.
  • Jimenez and freshman Sierra Fretz totaled two RBI each.
  • Seven of the 10 Great Danes' batters notched at least one hit.
  • Four UAlbany runners crossed home - Jimenez (twice), junior Caitlyn Mitros, graduate student Katie Falotico, and junior Emma Adams.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Junior pitcher Wendi Hammond opened the contest with a strikeout. 
  • The Black Bears tallied what proved to be their only run of the game in the first inning.
  • Leading off for the Great Danes, Caitlyn Mitros singled up the middle to get on base.
  • After two stolen bases from Mitros, junior Morgan Petty drove Mitros home with a ball to right field.
  • UAlbany's defense saw two innings with three-straight outs to quickly make it to the fourth inning.
  • Despite Maine seeing two hits in the fourth, the Great Danes left three on base to head back to the dugout.
  • UAlbany's offense enjoyed the bottom of the fourth. Overall, the inning saw four hits and three runs from the Great Danes.
  • With just one out on the scoreboard, UAlbany compiled five straight hits from Katie Falotico, Petty, Maranda Jimenez, and Sierra Fretz, in that order. Jimenez and Fretz each saw at least one RBI to bring the score to 4-1.
  • Both the Black Bears and the Great Danes left one on base in the fifth inning.
  • The sixth inning saw a double play from Hammond and Falotico. Hammond caught a line drive and passed it to Falotico at first to grab the automatic out.
  • In the first pitch of the bottom of the sixth, Jimenez sent the ball flying over the left-field fence to give UAlbany a 5-1 advantage.
  • After three final outs, including a strikeout from Hammond, the Great Danes sealed the game-one victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Great Danes tallied a run in both the first and second innings to make it a 2-0 game.
  • In the third inning, the Black Bears tallied three runs but UAlbany added a third run to tie the score at three.
  • With the sun almost completely down, the coaches and umpires decided to halt the game and pick it up on Sunday at the top of the fourth inning.
 
NEXT: The Great Danes look to close the second game and complete the weekend series with a third game on Sunday, April 10. Play will begin at 12 pm.
