Short Story: The University at Albany baseball team opened its road series against UMass Lowell with a tough 13-0 loss on Friday night. The Great Danes were able to keep up with the River Hawks until the fourth inning, allowing just two runs, but UML pulled away with a three-run fifth, a four-run sixth and a four-run seventh.

  • Brad Malm went 1-3 with a double and a sac fly, picking up the lone RBI for UAlbany.
  • Jason Bottari scored the run, going 0-1 with two walks on the night.
  • Will Binder (1-4) and Michael Whalen (1-4) both recorded one hit for the Great Danes.
  • UAlbany left six runners on base, UMass Lowell left eleven runners on base.

How it Happened:
  • Ray Weber started on the mound for the Great Danes, LJ Keevan started for the River Hawks.
  • UMass Lowell struck first in the bottom of the second. Roddy Hernandez hit an RBI single to right field, scoring Robert Gallagher. The following at-bat, Jacob Humphrey tripled to left field, driving in Hernandez and giving UMass Lowell a 2-0 lead.
  • The River Hawks extended their lead in the bottom of the fifth. Brandon Fish first hit a no-out RBI double to score Ryan Proto and Fritz Genther followed with a two-run single to left-center, bringing home Gallagher and Fish.
  • Nicholas Jessen replaced Weber at the start of the sixth.
  • UMass Lowell tallied four more runs in the bottom of the sixth, taking a 9-0 advantage. Gerry Siracusa singled to left to drive in Proto, Cedric Rose walked and Gallagher was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, crossing home two more times and finally, Genther hit a sac fly to center field, bringing home Fish.
  • Brendan Williams took the mound for UML to start the seventh.
  • Four more runs in the bottom of the seventh gave the River Hawks a 13-0 lead. Siracusa first doubled up the middle, scoring Luccini, Fish grounded out but scored Humphrey, Siracusa crossed home off an RBI single by Rose who was later driven in as Genther doubled to right-center.
  • UAlbany made a pitching change midway through the seventh when Steven Turk entered the game.
  • The Great Danes got their first run in the bottom of the eighth when Jason Bottari crossed home on a sac fly by Brad Malm. Bottari previously walked and advanced to third on a wild pitch and a single by Will Binder.
  • UMass Lowell's Zach Fortuna came in to close in the bottom of the ninth.
