Great Danes Drop Game Two Against Hartford

Short Story: The University at Albany baseball team lost game two of its weekend series with Hartford 7-12. The Hawks took an early lead in the opening inning and pulled out of reach with a four-run fourth. The Great Danes were led by Johnny Marti and Jason Bottari who both picked up two RBIs.

Head Coach Jon Mueller: "We left a number of guys on base throughout the contest. The free passes hurt us throughout as well.  We are in position to win a series on the road, which is a good spot to be in."

  • Johnny Marti finished 4-5 with two RBIs and two scored runs. 
  • Will Binder (3-6), Will Feil (3-4) and Jason Bottari (3-5) all recorded three hits. Bottari collected two RBIs and Feil picked up one. Binder crossed home twice.
  • Michael Whalen and John Daly both went 2-4 and picked up an RBI. Whalen scored one run.
  • Brad Malm, Josh Loeffler and Chris Fisher had the remaining hits for UAlbany, all finishing 1-5. Malm crossed home plate once.

How it Happened:
  • Anthony Germinerio started on the mound for the Great Danes, Tim Blaisdell started for the Hawks.
  • Johnny Marti got the Great Danes on the board in the opening inning with an RBI single to center field, scoring Will Binder who hit a leadoff double.
  • Hartford scored two runs in the bottom of the first when Noah Rivera hit a two-RBI double to score Tremayne Cobb Jr. and Derek Tenney. 
  • In the bottom of the second, the Hawks added another run off a solo homer by Daniel Burnett, taking a 3-1 lead.
  • Will Feil hit a sac fly to left field in the top of the third, driving in Marti who previously singled and making it a one-run game.
  • Hartford's Rivera homered in the bottom of the third, making it 4-2 in favor of the Hawks.
  • UAlbany made it a one-run game once again as Marti hit his third single in as many at-bats, driving in Binder in the fourth.
  • A solo home run to left by Tenney in the bottom of the fourth gave Hartford its fifth run of the game.
  • Nicholas Jessen took the mound for the Great Danes midway through the same inning.
  • Still in the fourth, Joseph Woronick hit an RBI single, scoring Cobb Jr. and Burnett hit a two-run single, scoring Rivera and Jake Santiago, giving the Hawks a 3-8 lead.
  • Manny Corporan replaced Blaisdell for Hartford at the start of the sixth.
  • Hartford made its second pitching change during the seventh as James Judenis took the mound.
  • A two-run single by Jason Bottari in the top of the seventh brought the Great Danes within three runs. 
  • Rob Manetta came in to pitch for UAlbany at the beginning of the bottom of the seventh.
  • In the same inning, Hartford extended their lead on a solo home run off the bat of Tyler Holmes and an RBI double by Tenney, scoring Brett Anderson. 
  • In the top of the eighth, Michael Whalen drove in Brad Malm on a ground out and John Daly tripled to right field to bring home Marti, making it 7-10.
  • Hartford's Will Nowak entered the game midway through the eighth.
  • The Hawks plated two more runs in the bottom of the eighth. Tenney doubled to left field, scoring Anderson and Holmes.
