Bottari Breaks Stolen Base Record, Baseball Captures Big Win Over Hartford

Short Story: The University at Albany baseball team won its series opener against Hartford in impressive fashion. A six-run opening inning set the stage on Friday, as the Great Danes defeated the Hawks 19-8. Johnny Marti led UAlbany's offense with a team-high five RBIs, closely followed by Will Binder and Michael Whalen who both drove in four runs. Jason Bottari broke UAlbany's single-season stolen base record with his 29th steal of the year.

  • Jason Bottari stole two bases, his 28th and 29th steal of the year. He now holds UAlbany's single-season stolen base record.
  • Johnny Marti went 3-5 with a home run and a walk. He collected five RBIs and scored once.

How it Happened:
  • Ray Weber started on the mound for the Great Danes, Alec Couture started for the Hawks.
  • The UAlbany offense started the game with a strong six-run opening inning. Will Binder first walked and Brad Malm doubled, putting two Great Danes in scoring position. The next at-bat, Johnny Marti brought both of them home off a two-run single up the middle. With one out, Will Feil and Michael Whalen reached second and third, respectively before John Daly drove in Whalen for run number three of the inning. Josh Loeffler made it 6-0 the following at-bat off a three-run home run to right field, also scoring Feil and Daly.
  • The Hawks made their first pitching change at the beginning of the second as Robert Chaney checked in.
  • The Great Danes added three runs to their lead in the third. Will Binder scored Carson Dunkel as he reached first on a fielder's choice. Dunkel previously doubled to right field to get on base. Johnny Marti picked up another RBI off a sac fly, driving in Jason Bottari, who singled, and Michael Whalen made it 9-0 with an RBI-double to center, bringing home Binder.
  • Hartford got two runs back in the bottom of the third off a two-run double down the left field line by Tremayne Cobb Jr.
  • In the top of the fourth, Bottari crossed home on a sac fly by Binder, making it 10-2.
  • In the following inning, Johnny Marti hit a leadoff home run, his third this season, making it 11-2.
  • Also in the top of the fifth, Feil scored on a double by Daly.
  • The Hawks scored their third run in the bottom of the fifth when Derek Tenney singled through the right side, scoring Kyle Hawes.
  • Julien Giroux-Harvey took the mound for the Hawks at the start of the sixth.
  • Marti once again collected an RBI as he drove in Binder with a single to second base in the sixth. The next at-bat, Whalen made it 14-3 with a single to the pitcher, scoring Malm.
  • Hartford's Jake Santiago hit a solo home run to right field in the bottom of the same inning.
  • In the top of the seventh, Binder singled to the shortstop with the bases loaded, scoring Daly. Loeffler crossed home the following at-bat when Malm reached on a fielder's choice. Still in the seventh, Whalen picked up his third and fourth RBI of the afternoon with a two-run single through the left side, driving in Malm and Dunkel.
  • Nick Gatton entered the game for the Hawks halfway through the seventh.
  • Kyle McCaffrey came in to pitch for the Great Danes to start the bottom of the seventh.
  • Logan Cole scored for the Hawks in the seventh as Santiago reached first base on a fielder's choice.
  • Binder made it 19-5 in the eighth off an RBI single up the middle, scoring Dunkel.
  • The Hawks loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth and drove in three more runs. Noah Rivera scored Santiago with a single to left, Ryan Knight walked to score Kevin Koziol and Hawes brought home Daniel Burnett with a sac fly.
